I am looking to either buy or build a muzzy here in the very near future. I have little experience with them, and I am curious of the overall accuracy of 45 vs 50 cals. I understand the 45 will be “more” accurate, but is the 50 going to be adequate to approx. 200 yds with open sights, and maybe 400 or so with a scope? For reference I am mainly looking at a knight ultralight or building one off of a 700 action, and I have a lot of long range rifle experience and custom builds. I would opt for 45 cal but my issues stem from the fact that I live in CO, and part of the reason I am wanting a muzzy is to increase my draw odds and give me more hunting opportunity. As many know you have to have 50 cal or larger for elk in CO, so if I go the 45 route in favor of the accuracy I am losing the ability to hunt elk in CO with it. Just curious as to people’s opinions on the accuracy and maybe some other things I should consider in this situation that more experienced muzzle loader guys would know about.

Hard to beat the performance of a .45 cal muzzleloader using the custom High BC bullets. With a custom built .45 muzzleloader you can get about 2400 fps with a 300gr bullet. Hard to get that kind of performance with a .50 cal. I say use an off the shelf .50 cal for elk hunting in CO and build a custom .45 cal for everything else.

If I had only one muzzy it would be a 50 cal. Everything for it is cheaper and easier to find because it is by far the biggest seller. And you will def want to hunt elk if you start with the 45!🤪 Out to 200 yards you will be more than good. Knight guarantees MOA our to 200 yards. Can’t expect to do any better than that.

I killed a bull elk at 538 yds with a used $250 cva accura v2 $150 vortex crossfire ll 3-9x40 327 gr Parker products black max a magnum sub base and 104 gr blackhorn 209 the gun puts 3 touching at 100 yards i wouldn't be concerned with a 45 over 50 for accuracy reasons

I am not sure I moved and haven't found my spec sheet yet but I believe it was right around 2200 fps

Yes but you need to use these with it to get that kind of velocity i was using 105gr by weight of black hard 209 with federal 209A primers it kicks like a mule just a FYI

2,200 fps with a 327 Grain Bullet, and 104 Grains of Blackhorn?

84 Weight, 120 Volume is Blackhorns MAX Load listing. And you are Shooting 105 Grains By WEIGHT of Blackhorn 209 in a Cheap CVA Accura V2?

You can say what you want but that's what I shoot and it shoots great and I called CVA and they said the gun is safe to shoot a 500 gr slug with 120 gr (loose) powder all day long they told me im safe to shoot until the primer becomes hard to remove from breech plug were the words out of one of their test shooters

lol i highly doubt they told you that. Even cva lists a 400gr conical as max unless its one of their powerbelts which then is ok to shoot a 444 flat point. 120gr volume of bh209 is fine yes, but you just claimed to be shooting 105gr WEIGHT.
