Phone user myself but maybe the newer standalone gps bring something to the table?

They bring a lot to the table when your phone dies because you’ve been using onx all day, or waiting around for the evening hunt watching porn. If you’re not comfortable in the area you’re hunting, a phone plus a gps isn’t a bad thing.

My buddy almost died about 10 years ago in Colorado. A blizzard came in 2nd season. He ended up in the ER, but 3-4 guys died in the same storm on the same mountain. His gps died (don’t use alkaline batteries in extreme cold). He didn’t have a backup gps and you couldn’t see 10 feet in the blizzard. If it’s a spot you don’t know we’ll, carry a spare.

Nope, east of there. But it was all of northern Colorado. People get complacent sometimes with the mild weather, then it turns and drops 2 feet of snow and drops below 0. Be prepared!

That might be the same storm. I was way north west and only got high winds and about 8 inches but anywhere east of us was much worse. Coming home over rabbit ears pass looked like trail ridge road when they cut the first path in late spring.

I’ll have to ask him how many people died on the mountain that night. He spent 3 days in the ER. It was a wild story. He did a lot of things wrong and got really lucky.

I had a coworker in the flattops. Said they played survivor instead of hunting. They were experienced and prepared but still

to me it depends on length of trip and if you can charge the phone everynight.

Remote alaskan river trips that are 10 days, i use the gps, day trips in the front country, the phone is pretty good. I did the irondog snowmobile race last winter, they required a gps, not a phone.

I usually punch in the location of my truck on a really old gps and keep it turned off in my pack. It has the same batteries as my head lamp so I figure it’s my backup battery holder. Definitely not necessary to find my way back, but it’s nice knowing I can make it back in the shortest line possible.

Also keep a phone cable and the smallest goal zero battery stick in my pack so I don’t have to worry about a dead phone.

I keep a Garmin mini, and my fenix 5 (with gps) and my phone with BaseMap. Redundancy is a good thing in the back country…
