Ham and APRS systems for GPS Tracking and SMS messaging.

Well, like the title says, I’m curious if anyone here is a Ham operator and uses these systems in the backcountry? I am currently working on my Ham Tech license. If anyone is using either of these technologies in the backcountry, could you comment on your hardware, apps, etc. I’m new to the Northern part of Colorado and am geeking out on this subject. Thanks!
