Importing Red Stag Skull/Antlers from the UK -> US

I had the good fortune to stalk red stags in Scotland last month. I'd like to bring the skulls with antlers attached back to the United States. In years past, the gamekeepers told me that packaging and shipping them to the US was a non-event, but that regulations - either in the UK or US or both - had complicated this recently.

As far as I can tell, the US piece doesn't look that complicated. The UK end requires registration and inspection, but I'm not sure whether registration is intended for broader or export/import or not.

I thought I'd put it to the group here on that not unlikely chance that someone has undertaken this in recent years. Appreciate any pointers you can offer.
