I have hunted with 2 different outfitters that I had success with. Absaroka and Elk Creek. Absaroka is mostly private land and varying terrain from easy to walk to tough and deep. They are getting 9-10 k for a 5 day combo hunt these days. Reasonable success rates on smaller elk...lots of rags, 5's and small 6's.
Elk Creek is mostly public land and steep and deep. Lots of critters and if you are in shape, saavy and willing to walk, pretty good success rates. 6k for a combo 6 day hunt. Have taken both elk and deer with both outfitters.

I have done the Google search many times. Reached out to a few of the outfits and have only heard back from one. That's why I joined this forum. Was hoping a few guys could give me a few suggestions on guides they had good experiences with.

Short answer is to stay the hell away from the mentioned Outfitter and NW MT.

To a slightly lesser degree, stay away from all of W MT.

Private (or accessing land locked public via private) in Central MT is your best hope for getting a service out of your +/-10K.

There are numerous threads on here and I’ve posted on a few about being VERY careful with your money. Do not buy the snake oil from an “Outfitter” like you mentioned, then they take you to a general hunting district with shitty numbers with a guide that’s never killed a bull.

In Montana, the elk herds have been hit pretty hard. There are big elk out there if you are willing to either scout hard, have insider info and work very hard to find a 320+; or pay for it. Wolves, Bears, and over tagging by Game and Fish have really packed the hunters in. I have killed many elk in montana and my experience has been, if you find an elk you like, kill it. No matter what the size
If there is a 350 bull that is accessible, it is rare that 100 guys dont know about it and 30 of them hunt it

I didn't realize how badly some areas have been impacted by the wolves until recently. A friend's cousin recently moved back to PA and was telling me how just in the 5-6 years he lived there areas have been decimated by them. Unfortunately he wasn't a hunter or much into the outdoors. So, he wasn't able to offer up much info.
If PA was closer to MT I would probably try a DIY hunt again. With only 2 weeks of vacation it makes it almost impossible though. Did one in CO in 2018. Paid the ranch $1500 for 5 days of access. Glassed up some beautiful bulls and had they been on my side of the property line would have harvested one.
I never pass on anything the first day of a hunt that I would shoot on the last day of the hunt. I'm not much of a trophy hunter. But, I hope to hold out for 250" or larger bull. Sometimes the the trophy was just the hunt itself. Thanks for the info!

If you do decide to hunt, get in the best possible shape you can. I mean better than you have been and better than you think you need to be. Better hunt, higher success, and your guide will love you for being able to go where most hunters cannot. A high % of my success has been conditioning and of the elk I have taken, I can think of 4 or 5 of them that would have never happened had I not been in great shape.

That’s a hard pass even in an elk rich area. Where he guides is not game rich with the wolf numbers. I’d strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

I have hunted the belt ranges for 17 years. If you go deep on horses, hiking or have access to private ground there are elk there. Especially with an outfitter that knows their stuff
Lots of wolves and bear. Lots of folks on any accessible road or 2 track. Most of it is just a factor of hunter numbers. Montana issues between 16 and 17 thousand elk tags per year.

Like a lot of western Montana and Idaho wilderness areas the Bob has been decimated by wolves. There are also a good population of grizzlies there. Great place for summer camping. Some of the most beautiful country you’ll ever see. Not so good if you want to see an elk.

No,2025 or 26. I would a guess most places would be booked for this year unless they had a last minute cancelation.

OK. I was just going to say if you were wanting to go this year, you would need to put in for a tag before April 1.

As far as outfitters being booked up.....there may be some specific high dollar ranches that are booked out, but there are lots of $5K-$15K hunts out there to be had. Cheaper ones on public land, more expensive on private. Most outfitters you call will tell you they only have a spot or two left and you need to give them 50% deposit to hold it, but the honest ones will tell you they will still have openings if you want to pull a tag on your own and call them back over the summer.

If you’re wanting to hunt the NW corner look at Waypoint Outfitters. Josh and his guys run a good outfit, you’ll have opportunities if you’re in shape

I’ve fished a ton in the Bob and never seen an elk. I saw a few small deer once.

I hunted bear with him in 2017. It was my first outfitted western hunt. I had no other experience to compare it to. I did see forty bears and zero elk in my five days. My buddy just shot a lion with him last month.
