Walking through Scheels looking for a new bolt action - with all the cool features.
I may have mumbled something about wishing they built them like they used to while holding a Bergara, looking at a Christensen Mesa, and clicking my heels - next thing you know, like a Christmas miracle, on the used rack right there in front of me was a new looking Remington with old school kewl written all over it! $200?!
Right out of 1960, this rifle doesn't even have all the bluing worn off the inside of the barrel - only driven to church on Sunday by a little old lady from Pasadena. Not many calibers are as old school as the 30-06, so it also has that going for it.
Honestly I’ve never seen one of these on a rack until yesterday - had to google it to find out it was designed to be a fancy 721/722 before the 700 came out. It was the first time Remington used an aluminum BDL style floor plate. The trigger is like a 721 but the safety look was taken right off the 1917 Enfield - a vintage touch even for 1960.
Since this is a long range rig, the perfect scope has to be a 1960s vintage Leupold 7.5x, so I’ll be bidding for one of those in the near future.
Maybe the boomers had this long range thing figured out better than we thought? I though the younger generations invented it? Lol
The photo isn’t my rifle (that bolt handle is much more worn) - it wont come home for a day or two.
