Hey all hope everyone has a tag or two and is getting ready for the season.
I had some questions hopefully someone may shed some light on. First off my wife drew a LE Archery Deer tag in the Utah Bookcliffs unit. She has never killed anything with her bow I could care less what she brings home other than good memories to go again. She has a little higher expectations than me which I can understand. I have killed some nice animals and waiting 9 years can add pressure. Im excited for the experience she will get from this and all of opportunity it brings, forgiving country if needed, family trip with our two kids and to see a lot of animals daily.
Back to the question I've really only hunted in the high country so the terrain is very different than what I'm used to. Im wondering if the behavior is different? In the high country early you may catch an old buck up high on a windy ridge escaping the bugs and watching the valley below for danger. Do the deer tend to shade up more or stay in timbered areas more? Do they stay closer to water sources?
Next question I would have is related to hunting pressure where do the majority of hunters tend to go? Are most people road hunting and stalking from there or are the majority back in on the roadless or more remote ridges? We plan on going the first 8-9 days of the hunt if needed.
I did travel out there June 27 & 28 I seen over 50 bucks close to 200 elk 3 turkeys and 2 bear. I never left the road to do so I was just trying to get a feel for the country and what to expect. Hopefully I can find time to make it once more before the hunt.
