Hey everyone, I have decided on my hunting ammo setup for this year but now need to decide what distance to sight my rifle in at to obtain the Maximum Effective Point Blank Range? This will assume a 6-8" shot area on a deer.

Ammo:
Caliber: .270 Win
Bullet: Nosler Accubond 140gr
Velocity: ~2950fps
G1 BC: .509
SD: .287

I have heard the ole' rule of thumb of a 25 yard sight in that will get you out to 300yards while staying within the 6" area.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

We always sight our .270s in at 100 yards make the math easy .270 is a very flat shooter, we run the 130 ballistic yellow tips, and my father and i kill about 8 deer between us a year with them maybe more on a damage year, ive killed whitetails out to 430 yards with mine.

how far are you wanting to shoot? You say 6-8" shot area but that is only giving you 3"4" of vertical from center.

Generally I zero at 200 for guns I am not dialing. with most guns including the 270...hold high shoulder/Spine at 300 and your good to go.

If I am using a gun that I have a scope set up for dialing distance than I zero at 100yds.

1.5 inches high at the 100 yard range is what a lot guys sight their 270 in at, which is a 200 yard zero with most 130gr store bought ammo. You mentioned 25 yards? Maybe just for the initial adjustments to get on paper but after that it’s good to shoot at 100 yards out to whatever distance you plan on hunting at.

I strongly second cnelk's post. Finding and learning how to use a ballistic calculator is your friend. The Hornady online calculator is decent. There are also several really good ones you can download to your phone as an app. I personally use Shooter, but others work well.

Playing around with one of these will show you how much variables such as BC, velocity, temperature, elevation, etc. will affect trajectory. This will provide the answers to the questions you have tailored specifically to your rig and hunting conditions.

I sight my 270 in for a 200 yard zero. The most important tip, ballistic calculators get you in the ball park. You always want to validate what they tell you with what your rifle and load actually do to be sure.

I’ve used the 270 now for 40yrs and I like to sight at 3” high at 100. Good out past 300yds. Very seldom I shoot that far but for the first time in my life I shot sn elk at 324”. Held dead on and got both lungs and it fell in its tracks

I have always heard that dead on at 25 yds is dead on at 100 yds. Never tested that theory however.

Check out this link if you're looking to calculate your actual MPBR. Take the guesswork out of the process.

If you don't intend to shoot at an animal past 300 to 350 yards, then this is a very simple and effective way to sight in your rifle.

I plugged your numbers into a calculator, and if you're looking for +/- 4" zeroing at 280 yds will give you 4" high at 160 yds and 4" low at 330 yds.

Do not sight in at 25 yards and expect that to be on at 100 and beyond. I’ve tested this theory every time I sight in a rifle. It will sometimes hold true, but I wouldn’t rely on it.

Zero it for 275 yards for dead hold out to 350.

Shooting at 25 and hoping to hit at 300 is like buying a lottery ticket. Most of the time it's a miss.

I shoot 3006 and 243 and zero for 275 to shoot out to 400 with a little holdover.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I am going to go with a 2.5-3” high at 100yards. Then I plan to test it out at the range with various distances (50, 150, 200, etc.)
