WY Draw Question

So I hunted WY last year and have a big fat 0 pts for this year. I am still going to apply this year and hope for some luck in the random draw (provided my wife doesn't find out before I apply that WY is holding my money for 4 months...……..lol)

With that said here's my question. If I list 3 choices on my hunt app do I have a chance in the random draw for each of those choices(provided there are tags left for the random)?

Would it benefit me to list a special entry as my 1st and 2nd choice with general as my 3rd, or should I list general as my 1st and be done with it.

I think that WY goes through all the 1st choice applications then moves to the second choice and finally 3rd choice. So there are 3 rounds. I'd make my first choice the hunt with the best odds.

1st choice is looked at in the pp side, then again in the random side. Then they go to 2nd choice, random only. Then to 3rd, random only.
Look at the random demand reports for your odds at a random tag. For 2nd choice hunts: (quota minus 1st choice = quota remaining for 2nd choice apps.)

Theoretically but if you're applying for an "any elk" tag it's basically one round as almost all of them go to first choice applicants in the draw, but there are some that sneak through to second choice and many full price antlerless tags would make the second or third round

String&stick is spot on. If you want to hunt WY and not use points then you need to look at the leftovers after the resident draw. Mostly cow/calf tags. Any leftover bull tags will be in wilderness or griz infested wilderness territory. In other words not much to choose from.

the nice thing about the second choice if you did draw is you keep your points and still build points. That being said you won’t draw on second choice for any of the any elk tags.

Good deal, thanks for the info guys. Looks like the best option is to roll the dice and just apply for a general tag in the special and hope to get lucky in the random. According to gohunt odds were 25% last year, better than nothing.

I’m not 100% sure but I think all of your choices have to be either special or regular. Wapitibob would likely have a solid answer to that.

25% draw odds for a non resident with zero points is really pretty good for a tag that can produce 350 plus bulls.

Are you sure? I recall someone saying they drew a tag they had more than enough points for in the random, indicating the random draw is conducted first.

If you dig through WY G&F website, you'll find the explanation. In short, everyone, regardless of points goes through the PP draw (which is why you see 0 points in the odds reports), then the remaining go through random.

Didn't happen...someone was full of crap.

If they had enough points, they drew in the PP pool, which is drawn first, just like WB posted.
