Thanks gtriple! Not to be to needy but what type of information about the outfitter are you looking to find? Like a list of past client contact you can use as a reference? (with permission of corse) Where should I put that information other than on my website? I like the idea of having a thread...

Stephan Lake Lodge - Hunters Be Aware

Stephan lake has been sketchy for years. It's sold 3 times in the last few years that I'm aware of. I don't know anything about the new owners but I was optimistic that someone decent was going to buy it until I read this story. I'd talk to BGCSB (big game commercial services board) in Alaska...

Stephan Lake Lodge - Hunters Be Aware

From the sounds of it, a master guide registered for the area signed the contract for Stephan lake which is a common practice. Understandably op is very upset but from what I gathered of the contract portion of the story is they did it all legit. I seen the advertisement from Stephan lake as...

Good to know! I didn't think of letting people know that I'd make sure their trophy would be shipped to their taxidermist/home. Just sort of assumed it goes without saying.

Thanks for the input. Seems like comforts are definitely second to success by everyone's replies.

    Alaska bear hunting outfitters

Noted. Be honest! That's a shame there's so many operators around that are dishonest. I hear stories every year about outfitters false advertising their hunts and I definitely don't plan on being in one of those stories.

    Bear Bait

Good to know! Is that for both blacks and browns or just blacks? I've used the dog food and oil quite a bit but never tried the sugar. I try focusing on browns but still get quite a few blacks coming in.

Thanks Cornelius. Lots of really good questions to think about. Through my other research it seems like the #1 or #2 question is what the success rates are. Good luck on your gear rental setup. Years back I looked into it a bit but it seemed very hard to be able to provide quality equipment at...

    Bear Bait

I prefer the cheapest lol. I don't know much about horse feed and just purchase the cheapest they have with molasses. Seems like the exact type varies year to year depending on what's available. I still use other foods as well but horse feed has been productive.

Thanks for the feedback JJ. I've been guiding in ak for along time but have always worked for other outfitters and have never had to book my own hunters. Any info helps and its very appreciated

    ISO Air Taxi

It's going to be very very difficult to find a charter operator to drop you in a good hunting area for a reasonable price. Most charter services operate out of well known lakes, bays, or strips/runways. The few that do have true bush planes (cubs or maul type) charge a lot for sketchy landings...

Closest you've been to a Brown Bear?

Katmai National Park I've been 5 feet or so from bears many different times. While hunting on kodiak had one bluff charge from 8 yards to maybe 5 yards. Huffing and swaying back and forth. Hands were definitely shaking after

Horse feed with molasses is pretty productive in Ak for both blacks and browns.

Wondering what you all look for when choosing an outfitter. Weather its online or at a show. What are some key items you look for that determine they're a reputable outfitter? Not looking to advertise on here but I'm starting an outfit in Alaska. My first hunts are going to be May-June of 2024...
