Looking for good cartridge and budget rifle for 14 y/o

Got this for my son and like it so much I’ve been using it too. I had some shoulder issues and the low-recoil of 6.5 CM has been way better to shoot.

    Western WA

Same reason I’m not buying my permit again this year… You can get some more backcountry feeling in the walk-in only areas, but active logging along with brush picking and whatever else is happening can still make some traffic at times.

    Blacktail Wa?

So far, luck lol! I really want to get one still hunting in mountain timber. Where I live, Most hunt clear cuts or alpine basins. I’ve had the most luck just coming across deer between spots hiking around.

    Blacktail Wa?

Thanks a lot - that is really helpful info! Does it seem to matter if there are meadows/openings/cuts nearby? Any other features to help narrow down an area to start? I really like working the timber - I just need to learn to slow down and glass more. That’s a good elevation range for the...

    Blacktail Wa?

Lots of good info in this thread! I hunt the WA coast and occasionally the Peninsula. I’ve had some success, but mostly using typical tactics on timber company land. I love the high buck hunt as well, but unfortunately it interferes with archery elk so haven’t done it for a few years. I’d...

What is the weight? I know it varies by generation on this bag.

    WTB Youth bow LH

I’m looking for a bow to get my 11 y/o started. looking for something a bit better than the super cheap Walmart kiddie bows, but less than a new combo. A bit higher quality trad bow or used compound maybe? He’s a lefty, so it’s been hard to find something.

    Light but tough backpacking tents

Good info Swanny. I do keep my gear in dry bags - more worried about me falling in the creek. I want to have a way to get warmed back up. In WA I’m not. Sure I’d ever get everything dried out without a good sunny day. A tent stove would be nice, but its Not usually cold enough to justify it...

WTS Appy Trails Ultralight Backpacking Tent Mark III - $50

I'm letting go of this super lightweight floorless shelter. It's been lightly used, but stood up to everything I've thrown at it. I was on a windy ridge for 48 hours pretty exposed and no worse for the wear. Also has kept me dry in some rain being here in the PNW. It packs really small (can...

    Light but tough backpacking tents

Thanks for the replies! I set out to find a full sleep system at about 5 lbs. due to durability and the places I hunt, I’ve conceded this will probably be 6 or a bit more... I’m looking at maybe going back to a floor less to save some weight. For a bag it’s either lightweight down and I’d...

    Light but tough backpacking tents

I’m looking for a backpacking tent around 3 lbs or so. I’ve seen several lighter but it seems like durability and reliability starts to suffer. I’m looking for a double-wall bathtub floor option. I have a lot of floor-less experience but I don’t feel comfortable in the coastal rainforest...

How much curve is enough for an X-curve?

Great info, thanks all! Sometimes life would be easier with fewer choices!

How much curve is enough for an X-curve?

I'm getting pretty confident that the Sky 5900 is the next pack I want. I'm having a bit of trouble deciding on the frames. People seem pretty set on their preferences between them. If I understand correct, the choices are Krux Evo, R3 (pretty much the same from what I can find?), and the...
