Practice shots vs. hunting shots each year

I’m doing less shooting this year than normal, I should finish around 6,000 rifle rounds this year, down from 10-12,000 most years. I did and our spring hog hunts were a bust, so I won’t do as much big game harvest as I typically have in recent years, just 1-2 deer. So somewhere in the...

    Cheek riser thoughts

@Rockwell - no problem! First, your last question: no, there is not a gap on the sides on this stock. Installation on a composite stock: First, I determined appropriate position which allows the bolt to be removed without removing the cheek riser, and marked the screw holes. Since this is a...

    Cheek riser thoughts

Victor Company USA. Embed the screw anchors in the stock, then it will remain adjustable for other users or other optic heights. No annoying and ugly straps, no knobs on the side, just a nice, clean aesthetic.

    Dope Card for rifle hunting

It’s not so complicated. Kestrel weather meter, Hornady 4DoF or StrelokPro, up to the second localized data, and up to the minute corresponding ballistic solutions. Environmentals don’t need to be updated very often, as long as you’re within 500-1000ft, the result won’t shift more than a click...

Does my "ideal" deer gun exist?

@HuntnPack - the Havak and Havak Element share the same prefits. Has someone from Straight Jacket told you their Havak barrels won’t fit the Element?

Does my "ideal" deer gun exist?

If I were building an ultralight with a budget cap in mind - any cap at all - I would build on a Seekins Havak Element with a Proof prefit barrel.

Why no love for the Ruger Hawkeye?

Many of us hold nostalgic affinity for the M77’s, myself included, but the lack of aftermarket support, the sloppy action feel, and challenging accuracy compared to many other actions have been self limiting. There are also a lot of rumors flying around by relatively poor quality shadetree...

So, who is running a Seekins Havak?

@actionshooter - get an Armageddon Gear suppressor cover and live happy.

    Manbun bits......

The melodrama is a bit much. H4350 and 140 Accubonds would have my attention.

Mesa altitude stock with Arca rail?

I bore my t nut counterinks in fiberglass/carbon fiber stock barrel channels by hand with forstner bits in a T handle. The shell is the stiffness in these stocks, not the forend fill, so drilling doesn’t take away any strength.

    Bartlein Carbon Fiber wrapped barrels

Even better - Bartlein can and will use their new 400Modbb barrel steel under the carbon wrap if requested. Getting over 3,000 rounds of life from a carbon fiber wrapped Bartlein barrel sure sounds great to me!

    Favorite Bedding Compound?

Devcon steel for me. I’ve used Marine Tex and ProBed, and would again without concern, but I prefer Devcon Steel.

    Hunting Supressed

    I leave mine on.

Hold the fore stock or butt stock?

Run the rifle with your support hand from the buttstock. You’re a big boy, you can let go of the forend if you want.

Kestrel users - AB model or not?

@LineandBuck - if you compare the Ballistic/Sportsman, Elite, and Hornady 4DoF, the difference is really the 4DoF profiles/Custom Curves (4DoF/Elite). The Sportsman/Ballistic are great, but they are just fixed BC based calculators - even when using the multi-BC function, it’s a stair step...
