My wife's parents immigrated from Korea, originally from the North. Really interesting stories.
I'm not sure I'd want to visit given the biases against Americanized folks and half-whites. My father-in-law does not any longer want to go back to his homeland for these reasons, so not sure I...
Go with the bigger one. Neck size is important. The smaller grinder you will have to pre cut the meat smalll and it SUCKS. I had the older version of the small one, I had to pre-cube to 1-1.5" and it sucked. The bigger commercial version I can pre-cut an entire buck in about 10min.
Given...
I'd let my boy shoot whatever comes by. If you teach them the true value of hunting, shooting a major trophy is not going to "ruin" them. The thought of telling them "this one's too big for you, boy, Dad's going to shoot it" actually makes me sick.
You're not claiming there is some arbitrary...
When production (chips) can return to normal and meet demand, I'm sure prices will come down. But not down to what they were. If I could avoid buying now (with a 2yr horizon) I would. Same with powder/primers.
I bought a 2016 F150 in 2018 for ~29K. In Nov 2021 I totaled it hitting an iced...
I have an MBA and have a fair amount of finance experience. I have a 401K where I can manage the mix of investments, and a Vanguard index fund. That's it. I had an Etrade account with a modest amount in it, which I considered entertainment - basically the equivalent of other people going to a...
I loved Cabelas...20-25 years ago. I've had their credit card that long. Even before the buyout their stores had crap for inventory. Several times I made a special trip to one, only to be frustrated by lack of inventory. So I now buy online because it's worth a few bucks extra not to drive...
I can't touch some of these.
1) Early winter we got back 6-7 miles into the Bob in Montana on foot gaining elevation, continued past where guys on horses turned around. Before we could crest a squall came in, zero visibility. We were waist deep in snow, I told my buddy I knew how to get us...
I got caught with my pants down after Sandy Hook; didn't make as much money then, paying off student loans. I got into my LGS before opening the next morning, made sure I bought my first (of many) AR15. But from an ammo and component perspective I was scratching along for a long time.
Not...
I've been a long time Cabela's customer, I've had their credit card for close to 20 years. They were going downhill in the stores prior to the buyout. I haven't canceled the card yet, but post buyout it's really not worth it and the service is crap. The last few times I stopped at a store...
Out West is one thing, in the Midwest I wear orange even if I'm afield not hunting if it's gun season. Hunter density can be pretty high and properties small; bullets travel.
A number of years ago I got accused of shooting just a few feet over a fella's head as he sat in his blind. Turns out...
I've been running a 6 camera + transmitter system since May. Overall I give it 9/10. You just aren't going to get around power issues. It's physics. I have the 6 D-cell external pack on the transmitter. It went up mid-May and is going to make the season without being touched. The cameras...
A decade?
When I first hunted Montana south of Glacier (Bob Marshall) it was an amazing experience and there was plenty of game. Saw elk several times, got one, also a mule deer, they were everywhere.
The next spring the wolves moved in. By the next fall, game populations were dramatically...
I would agree that scientists are not evil self serving people. But they are human and subject to their own biases. I have personally been involved in research which challenged long-established dogma. As soon as we submitted the first paper, grants were rejected and top journals wouldn't...
You could simply put the card away and not use it, thereby not affecting your credit score. Then when you get another with the limit you want you can cancel it.
I've had a Cabelas card for more than 15 years. In that time the company has declined to nothing I consider special, never has...
I hunt a couple properties owned by a retired game warden. When he first walked me through them, he asked me if I had a pistol and a carry permit. Because if I didn't, he didn't want me hunting there. They had issues with slow-minded neighbors, and meth cookers (those two classes not mutually...
As I pack out on my back, I leave the bones in the field. "Quartering" is a misnomer, as there is a ton of rib and neck meat on an elk.
In my experience I get about 200lb of finished meat of an average bull elk to pack out. Give or take, YMMV.
I wouldn't disagree with this. Unless we are carrion beetles there is no such thing as 100%. They point is I've seen people claim 4 quarters backstraps and tenderloins is sufficient on an elk....and that leave a TON of meat under the front quarters unaccounted for.
The correct answer is "all of it". Anything that can reasonably be removed. This includes neck meat and rib meat. For those claiming 300lbs from a mature 6pt bull elk, kudos to you. I've shot a number of them and it's more like 200lbs. Not sure where the disconnect is.
Long and short of it...
An incredibly careless mistake, but one has to give the guy points for doing the right thing. Others could and have just let the animal lie and rot to escape the penalties.
