I can assure you that a heavy arrow will penetrate quite a bit more than a light arrow when they are otherwise set up the same and shot from the same bow. My focus is on large bull elk. With that in mind, I consider "very light" to be 450 or lower. I consider "very heavy" for NA...
Mahonsr - Here is one of my lists - looks like it was initially put together for 2022 fall hunt and then repurposed - not sure how to attach the spreadsheet so I'll try to copy a section. I used a numeric score of 5 (best) to 1 (worst). 5 = good, 4 = edible, 3 = bad. I guess I am reserving the...
I agree. Some years ago I started a spreadsheet to track and "grade" the different FD foods from various manufacturers because I can never remember exactly which ones are downright awful and which ones are decent. I try to keep notes when in the field, but that only works out less than half...
In the boy scout days and early backpacking (1970's) we relied on fires sometimes exclusively or extensively. Some of us eventually got Optims 8R's or Svea 123. Times have changed, and reliance on "open fires" is now unusual. Which usually leaves us with food that doesn't require heating or...
Nice! What bow site are you using and how is it mounted? It looks like the mounting hardware fits into a notch in the front edge of the bow. (hard to tell especially with all that snow - what a great cold weather test!!)
Really nice video, thank you. I tend to upgrade my bow every 15 years or so "whether I need to or not" and that time is coming. I'm a member of the Hoyt tribe so I always start there and have been considering upgrading to the Alpha X this year.
What the video did not do, as far as I can tell...
For those reading "BBob's" comment, let me just say that I believe he knows his stuff "like nobody's business" so if he has an opinion you would be wise to consider it. Thanks Bbob!
Nothing to do with weight. I'm aware that the form factor is the same.
I am probably better than average at hand holding binoculars in a stable fashion from a seated position. I find the 12X NL Pure's to be "less fun" to use than my 10X due to the extra shake when hand held. But I did not...
I have not directly compared the NL Pure 8x42 to the 12x42 but I own the 12's as well as an older pair of 10x42 SLC's (and a fewer other optics). This is a topic I have thought about a lot because I'd love to have a pair of 8x42's but my CFO, er lovely bride, doesn't see it the way I do. LOL...
Nice to see a reloader with a 7.08 AI.
I have a 7.08 that was customized and rebarreled for 7-08AI by Gordy Gritter about 15 yrs ago. I originally bought it from Remington custom shop as a Remington "Custom KS" 7.08. I like both cartridges the 7.08 and 7.08 AI, but the AI doesn't add a lot...
I tend to agree, and I have a custom Rem Model 7 that was blue printed and rebarreled from 7.08 to 7.08 AI optimized for 120 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip. That rifle was mostly dedicated to western mule deer. Given advances in long range shooting, if I did it over, I'd probably build something...
Mt. Warden - Good Post. I've been thinking the same way, but haven't done it much yet. With availability of today's extremely light and efficient equipment more options are developing. ...But I also use MRE's like some folks have said.
Here is an idea I am going to test this summer. May not...
Yup, same one I have - Chuck Adams. Mine is gathering dust also. Liked it a lot, but not enough to keep using it - too fiddly and a pain to sit down with it on.
Good info. Thanks. Tests done by backpacking light (I think) and others demonstrate a rather substantial advantage of the windburner vs. the Jet boil in windy conditions - I think a much greater advantage than what you found. Perhaps the tests I viewed were performed in colder and/or windier...
