2025 Blacktail Bucks

Well this is bitter sweet for me as my daughter has punched her last ever youth blacktail tag here in Oregon. We have had a great run with this tag and it was looked forward to every year she had it. Going into this last one the goal was public land only and an old crusty heavy chocolate horned buck, didn’t matter score or how many points. Just wanted one of those old ghosts. We were beyond blessed to find this guy. Cheers to the end of an era.

Thanks everyone! All I can say is get the younger generation involved. There are so many youth opportunities for some really awesome hunts and they can do them a few times. There’s nothing more gratifying than seeing a kid harvest an animal. Nothing in my opinion beats it.

While not as impressive as many bucks here, this is my 10 year old son’s first blacktail. He’s addicted now and can’t wait for 2026. Frankly, reignited my spark as well - while I always had a tag, I don’t think I have headed on a dedicated BT hunt since kodiak in ‘15.

Just took my 11 year old to Kodiak last week and he was able to shoot a buck for his first big game animal. Ended up tagging out with a doe and button buck. He’s also hooked.

Was awesome but I fear he may have unrealistic expectations for future big game hunts.

The way I am framing it is now that You've tasted success and are hungry for more - the work begins…shooting every weekend, hiking/glassing in the worst weather, reading BT books, handling your gun, perfecting your kit…he says “that sounds like the perfect life.”

Can’t really argue with that lol.

Thank you! Not sure of weight on him and I actually hate guessing just because I could be way off, but i have been hunting blacktails for 30+ years and he is the biggest bodied blacktail I’ve personally put my hands on. He was a tank. It was everything my daughter and I had to get him drug around for pictures. Just a true old monarch.

That’s pretty wild! I killed a 5.5 year old forky last year and he had wavy antlers, but not that extreme.
