I've had some great times with my oldest boy this year.

This was from September 2. Mostly elk hunting, but decided to hunt these bucks the last couple years since they're all up in my elk spot. I shot this one in his bed. I was able to get the truck within half a mile, so an easy pack out.

There was an absolute giant (at least to me) that I spotted across the canyon on opening day 3 days prior. I saw him trot down the hill for a few seconds and slide into a new bed, where I could barely see him. I assume he had just gotten up from a different bed.

I made a solid plan to stalk him, with a big log I could sneak up behind. Seemed pretty foolproof so I headed down to the creek and dropped my pack. There were some moo cows in the creek, but I thought they saw me and didn't care, but as soon as I started up the other side they blew up, mooing and running like crazy.

I figured maybe the buck was far enough up the hill he wouldn't be bothered, so I carried on, but I only made it another few feet before I see another massive buck bedded right up the hill maybe 80 yards away, staring at me. He was right between me and the first buck, so I figured I'd just try to go around him and hopefully he would head downhill. Didn't figure there was any chance of getting within bow range of him, but maybe the first buck was still there. Well, didn't make it far before a grouse blew up not 6 feet from me. Needless to say, both those bucks were long gone after all the commotion of my foolproof stalk.

After a pretty gruesome knee injury at the tail end of ski/sled season this year, 2025 was a year with very little scouting/hiking, and aggressive PT trying to get my body right. I was walking with a cane until June 26th!

I used archery season to start putting on the miles and testing my leg out, and by the time rifle season opened I was starting to feel like myself.

With a newborn 2 days before rifle opener last season, and the knee injury this year, I was honestly just grateful to be back on the mountain, so the buck I ran into last night was the icing on the cake. He was in a spot I have wanted to shoot a deer in since first seeing it in '22, and have spent countless hours searching for "the one". Got home at 4AM and could barely sleep, on cloud nine!
