.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Barrel is speeding up just a touch and groups are shrinking. Im either getting better or this gun just flat out shoots. I think its the latter.... second picture is at 320 yards. Just dialed with quick drop and sent 5 shots. Light wind but I just held center to see how they grouped.
Is this an OEM barrel? Sorry if you already posted that info

Anyone shooting 77 TMKs out of really short barrels when hunting? I just ordered a 9" 1 in 7 twist 223 pistol for S&Gs. Thought that with a red dot might work for a 75 yards and in whitetail pistol from tree stand or when walking through thick woods. My current loads are 2,525 fps from a 16" barrel. Probably will get 2,150ish (?) from the 9".

Yep, a buddy and I have both been using 77TMKs out of 10.5” pistols. We’ve shot deer, black bear, coyotes with them. We’re getting about 2500fps. I’m not afraid to take that to the max yardage where they stay above 1800. For me (1,000-1500’ altitude) thats about 375yds and in.

2525 seems a little slow. I get about 2625 from black hills 77TMK in 16” AR, and most get more speed from hand loads.IMG_7317.jpeg

I forgot to post this.

In mid-November, my daughter Aubrey asked if I would take her deer hunting, and I said absolutely. Here’s the backstory: She had never really shot a rifle in her life. I had tried to introduce her to shooting when she was younger, but she had no interest in hunting or shooting, and she had not taken a hunter safety class. Her life revolved around basketball.

Luckily, in Idaho, we have the hunting passport program, which allows her to get a tag once and hunt with an adult who has completed a hunter safety class. Next, we headed to the shooting range. She was initially worried about the recoil, but after firing a few shots with the .223, she was all smiles. After about a hundred rounds, we were both confident that she was ready.

Two days later, we woke up early to look for deer. I spotted a buck that was a bit too far away, so we jumped over a ridge to get to 297 yards. I had her dry fire a couple of times at the buck. Aubrey felt ready, loaded a round, and shot the deer behind the shoulder. It spun around and lay down. I instructed her to shoot again, and this time she hit it mid-body, and the deer was dead.

There’s almost no way she would have gained this confidence so quickly without that little suppressed piss ant .223 rifle. She has now completed her hunter safety class and has told me we are going elk hunting this year!

That’s the feel-good story of the year. All hail the piss ant!

Side note….can the OG223 be called the Piss Ant?

Is anyone running a 10x swfa on their RSS? I drank the coolaid and set one up with a swfa 3-15 that I really like. My wife really enjoys shooting the .223 with a can and want to help her get ready to fill some tags. A fixed power scope will definitely simplify some aspects and the 6x is mostly unobtanium. The .223 is a joy to shoot and I really look forward to killing some bears this spring with it.

I am, I enjoy it. I have 3 rifles with 10x swfas

The guy who does the Chopping Block and ARFCOM gel tests on youtube is telling me that if bullets like the 65gr Gameking and 77gr TMK are performing differently in animals than the way they woefully underpenetrate in his tests, I must be gut shooting deer with grandpappys mini 14.

Mind you the tests are shot like 2 feet from the block, which is fine if you have a focus on self defense, but even from an 11" barrel, you're gonna get more than 13-14" penetration from a 77gr TMK at 2500 fps or like 10.5 inches from a 65gr Gameking at 2773 fps. Thats over 100 yards if you start it from a rifle barrel (vs carbine)

You can't make this stuff up.

What would I have done without guys like this to "educate" me on real world bullet performance haha

Anybody have 10-12 rounds of black hills Tmk’s they’re willing to sell me? Thanks

It’s better to just buy 50!

Doesn’t he perform tests at 15 yards or something not pertinent to hunting scenarios? I prefer a 100 yard gel test. Or at least 50.

Its like 2 feet lol but velocity is velocity.

What distance is a 77gr gonna be at 2500 fps considering the speed at which many of us start them at? Or a 65gr Gameking at 2773? Getting well under a foot of penetration?

Shoot a deer/pig at 75 yards with a Gameking and get 10 inches of penetration? I dunno man. They exit from what I see. 77gr TMK often do too...I'd see maybe a 69 getting 14" of penetration and rarely exiting broadside deer at 2500 FPS but if anyone has shot em more than me I'd stand corrected.

That said I understand. Makes sense cause he does stuff with defensive shooting in mind but guys who shoot hunting bullets that close...yeah, no thanks
