I seen a few post here about this combo but they were all fairly old.
Seems like nobody ever really got them to shoot well. Only ones that did were running a PRC
I got a couple sample packs a couple months ago. Then realized I needed the stem and another Hornady die.
I generally shoot 240gr smk for my range load. I’ve ran my combo to 1305yards pretty easy. I can make it just past 1700yds before I run out of elevation. And that’s running a pretty chill load at 2760fps.
I want to use these bullets for a mile shooting. Higher BC would help me with a little more range in my scope.
Ive been using h4831sc. I’ve always like it over h1000 in the belted mags. 7mm, 300 win mag and 338 win mag.
I’ve gotta finish some loading up for a buddies 308win and I’m gonna try to go shoot them today if the wind plays nice. I’m planning on just doing a load work at 100yds. I don’t know if I’m gonna chrony them or not being I shoot a magnetospeed and don’t want to hang that stuff off my barrel and try to shoot groups.
Anyhow. Hopefully I have a good update here the next couple days.
If I can’t get what I want with the h4831sc, my next course will be using some n570. I’ve got some n560 I use with 180s and it does pretty well for me.

Finally was able to get out with the 230gr ATIPS
Nothing great. But I think the 71/72gr charge can get cleaned up with some seating depth. These are set pretty long. They still wouldn’t fit in my magazine. They definately started wanting to do better as they were getting faster.
I only had 24 of them being sample packs. I think I’ll look at some other powder to use and I’ll push the h4831sc further maybe up to 73-73.5gr
But for wanting them for a target load I don’t really need a lot of speed.
I was dealing with pretty rough crosswind today. But I’m not to worried about it at 100yds.
I think they’ll shoot in a 1-10tw with a little work
The top one in the 71gr charge was one of them from my 70gr load. I only had 4 of them. I dropped the elevation 2 mill being I’m set at 200yd zero. I ended up back to my regular zero set on my turret after that

Are you running a SAAMI chamber or ???

I have only shot up to 208 grains in a win mag. I’ve got 245 Bergers to shoot in my PRC.

Good luck and keep posting your results.

Yessir. SAMMI chamber. It’s a factory sendero 1-10tw. It really likes the 240gr smk. I’ll grab another box of these this week and do some more playing with them. Gonna have to find a suitable replacement for the 240s. I’ve only got about 450 of them left. Plus my loaded ammo. I should run these atips in my petersons brass. But I’ve got it all loaded up minus 20pcs. Maybe I’ll get another box of it too for the atips to see if I get any difference.

I am having fantastic luck with the 225eldm. I have killed elk at 70 and 700 with the combo and made a 3rd round hit on a bowling pin at 1980 with the same. It pretty well ended my quest for better....this is everything I need and nothing I don't.

I think a lot of reports of poor terminal performance probably has a lot of hunters avoiding the Atips. Do they stabilize in a 10 twist? The 225 ELDm is listed as les then fully stable in a 10.

Don’t have to try too hard to do better than the 240 smk from a BC standpoint. A 200.20x Berger has about the same BC and could be pushed way faster. 215s would be a good step up in BC and velocity. Same for 220 LRHTs.

I've sent a few hundred of them at a mile in a 10 twist with zero issues.
Yeah I didn’t mean to say they don’t work. Hornady just lists them as not achieving full BC with a 10 twist but that is probably at standard atmospheric conditions (sea level). The ATip is listed as about 0.100” longer than the ELDm as well.

I’m using the 240s because I got them cheap. .711 is a pretty solid bc for them. I could push them up a lot more than what I’m doing now. I want a good bullets that’s not a buck a piece ideally. I shoot my rifle a lot. I’m sitting at 3600-3800 elevation
