270 winchester ammo grain

New hunter looking for input as to grain choice for my .270. I am mostly looking to hunt for deer in the D3-5 area and was wondering if 150 grain is necessary or if 130 would be sufficient?

130 will do just fine for deer.

130s for deer, 150s for everything bigger unless you're shooting mono copper bullets. Then, 130s for everything.

For Idaho elk/moose/bear, I go 150 acc or 145 ELD-X. I stick with those for deer just to keep thing simple.

Do you mean D zones in Ca? If so it will be copper, and anywhere from 110gr-130gr is where you want to be.

Ah yes, brain fart on my behalf. In CA so theyll be lead free. In that case, do you recommend the upper range closer to 130 grain?

Unless you reload 130’s will be all that you can get in factory ammo (Barnes, Hornady, Nosler). If you reload many more options become available. I used the factory Barnes 130’s in my 270 for years with no complaints. I now hand load the Barnes 110’s and the Hammer Bullets 117gr. Mostly just went lighter to pick up some speed and it’s flatter shooting. The 130’s will be just fine.

I run 129 lrx from Barnes. If you need CA ammo soon I would start searching now. It is hard to find currently.

When I lived in D16 I shot Barnes VORTX 130 factory ammo with no complaints

150 grain partition doing 3100 will kill a lot of game. That’s been my go to load for my .270 win. Great ballistics with that load out to 500 yards

Thanks for all the info guys, I really appreciate it. If I decide to try going for feral hogs in CA will .270 130 grain be enough? I know they have thick shoulder plates. Obviously like with any hunting, shot placement is key

130 GMX or Partition for everything up to elk. Works well out to 500 plus yards.

I wouldn't sweat using the 130s on hogs... unless you find porkzilla, it's hard to imagine a Barnes coming up short on penetration.

Killed piles of hogs with a 130 copper pill from a .270. Up to elk at reasonable ranges, you absolutely do not need to worry about having enough gun. Try several types to find what is most accurate in your gun.

CA, non lead mandatory. 130 mono's more than enough for anything in CA

I use 130 grain copper bullets for everything, I like the speed with the 130 over the 150, plus here in CA 130 copper is more than enough for both deer and bear.
