Finally getting around to this project.

Tikka 30-06. 17 inch 1:9 twist bartlien barrel. Wildcat stock.

Lapua brass. COAL to lands is 3.451. I loaded all rounds to 3.431 for .02 jump

CCI BR2 primers

Goal is > 2800 fps.

Here are today's load tests

RL17: gave the highest velocity and was the least amount of powder.
55.5 gr: 2665
56.0 gr: 2696
56.5 gr: 2730

R22: Middle of the pack for velocity but the last two charges were slightly compressed
61.0 gr: 2646
61.5 gr: 2662
62.0 gr: 2683

N560: I had hope this would be the fastest powder but it was the slowest for velocity
61.0 gr: 2574
62.0 gr: 2594
62.5 gr: 2631

So, I'll load up more RL17 and see when I hit pressure signs. Plenty of room left in the case. Beware the man at the range with a rubber mallet!

I was hitting 8 inch steel at 335 yards with all powders. Seems reasonable enough to me to continue using one of them and look for speed.

Hopefully I can speak to how accurate the first chosen powder is. If it turns out to be inadequate I will move on to another I guess. I haven't had accuracy problems with RL17 before so fingers crossed that continues I suppose!

I guess I better step up my 300 WSM 24” barrel with the same bullet.

I haven’t tried much for powders but am seeing excellent accuracy at 2750 and mild pressure.

2800 in a short barrel 30-06 doesn’t seem quite right to me but once in awhile a combo can do some unthinkable things

Out of a 17 inch 30-06, 2800 from a 200 grain bullet is screaming fast. Heck, 2700 is way up there honestly. Make sure you've got your life insurance, etc in order before you put more powder in that case and hit the range. Good luck!

That’s hauling some ass for a 200gr in 30-06. Manufacturers try to leave some room for a safety in their load data but with a 200gr matchking @ loaded at 3.32” and 3.58” (I know it’s not a 200.20x but they are similar) in a 24” barrel, Sierra is showing a max velocity of 2680 and max charge weights of 52.6gr RL17, 57.9 RL22, 58.9 N560. You’re well over their max velocity with 7” less barrel, and several grains over what they found to provide safe pressures.

You might not be seeing pressure but it’s definitely there. At a minimum I’d say your brass life is probably going to suffer greatly. Be careful as you continue testing and let us know how it goes

In my 16” 30/06 I see a clear ejector mark at 56.5gr of rl17 with a 215 berger going 2630 fps COAL 3.605 with Rem brass

With RWS brass and the 185 juggs I see an ej mark at 59gr of H4350, 2757fps COAL 3.420

16” barrel? What rifle? What’s the use case? Not sure I’ve seen or heard of anyone shooting a 30-06 with a 16” barrel, but I’m intrigued. Tell us more.

Rem 700 factory sporter barrel .045” jump with the 215s and the 208s were jammed .005”

I run 215s at 2420 with 4350
215s at 2500 with rl17
208s at 2415 with h4350
These are mild loads you could run faster

Haven’t shot the 185s much but I think they will run around 2630 on the mild end.

124 Hammer hunters and 125 Sierra tipped game kings are running 3200-3250 with varget and xbr8208
These are pretty close to max loads although you could probably run the 124HH close to 3300 if the accuracy is there.

Shooting side by side with my 18” 6.5 creedmoor at 750 yards the 215s going 2420fps have much less drift then the 140s going 2600fps

I set the rifle up for a short range hog hammer using the 125s, but it does surprisingly well at longer ranges. So far the 125s shot the tightest at 100yards and the 208gr eldms at 750 yards shot some impressive groups for a factory 700.

I have Berger 200.00X and 200 hybrids to try but thinking I’m going to focus on the 185s more to reduce recoil in my light rifle.

Why 17 inch barrel? Are you shooting it suppressed?
I like a short rifle. I haven't felt a short barrel holds me back. And where I usually hunt, smaller the better! Thick is an understatement.....

Not shooting suppressed yet, but one day I hope to buy one.

Let me know if you want to off load some of those 200.20s.

Not sure the juice is worth the squeeze with 200s in a 3006. I ran some numbers on what I’d reasonably think of getting and stuck with 180 and 185s.

The more squeeze the sweeter the juice, boi.

Loaded up some more RL17 rounds. Will head out this afternoon and see what happens.

Glad to see success with RL 17 on so many strings. Grabbed some for my 300 wsm, now thinking all I want to hand load for are my -06 and .308.
Started looking on here and see I may not need to go find some 16 for the -06 (or 22 or 23, whichever that was,) if the 17 turns out ok. Very cool.

Finally made it back behind the rifle.

RL 17:
57: 2736
57.5: 2752
58: 2785 bolt felt a little stiff to open
58.5: 2802 bolt was a little stuff to open

I don't see any pressure signs on the brass. But given the bolt was a little stiff that's enough for me to back down. I'll probably stick with ~57.5 grains of RL17 for somewhere around 2750 fps.
