7 08 Barnes 120gr ttsx for elk?

Looking for opinion on 7 08 Barnes TTSX for bull elk up close. Talking about 50-100yards, 200 max. I have 300win mag for longer distances, this would be in case I gotta go in thick stuff. It is my deer/bush setup that I like and hate to change at this point. Thx in advance.

Welcome to the forum.. You’re not going to hear about much love for copper bullets on here…. They provide a deep , narrow wound that can lead to longer times before the animal expires…

This is going to be a barrage of questions. It will help to view me as a skeptic relative to the matter at hand. I am going to do some load development for my new 6mm Creed. I live in the southeast where shots are rarely taken at more than 100 yards. But, I fancy that I will take a trip out west one day to hunt antelope, so I am going to do my load development with an eye toward the possibility that I might shoot out to say (for the sake of discussion) 500 yards. This is a hunting gun.

Time to order bullets. I see questions asked frequently across various forums asking about using...

True. However, I don’t like explosion inside the animal, too much can go to waste. That’s why I switched to copper. And, in my experience, does great job. Bull at 300, quartering, 1 round dropped him like freight train. He did get up and walked 30 yards to reach eternal pastures. This was180gr TTSX from 300winmag. 2 other animals and story repeats , 1 hit, 1 kill.

I think I got my answer, thank you for the video. Especially because at 100yrds we are talking about 2700fps and 2000ftlbs and placement shouldn’t be a problem. Thx!

Nothing wrong with your choice. I don't want massive holes as elk meat is excellent. The TTSX is, IMO, the best made by Barnes bullet. I use them in my 270 Weatherby and the Hornady 130 CX in my 270.

Patrick Smith's comments about killing power: Shot placement. Shot placement. Shot placement. Use enough bullet. Use enough gun.

A 7mm-08 is a light recoiling round, so it should be easy to put on in the right spot. You're trying to hit something the size of a trash can lid.

Yes. The Barnes are great, especially at close range. I don’t understand the “maximum carnage” mentality with bullet selection that some guys have. I want to avoid ruining meat and I don’t want to eat any lead.

At those ranges it is a great choice. My brother just put a .277 130 gr TTSX into a Moose at 75 yards. Ended things quickly and with little to no meat damage. TTSX and LRX are great performers as long as velocity is adequate.

It will with proper placement and a high velocity impact.

Don't overlook the 120 grain Ballistic Tips, I killed my bull last year with a couple well place shots, along with a bunch of other critters the past few years. Most rifles seem to shoot them good or great

I killed my bull this year with a 7-08 and a 140 grain Accubond at a little over 250 yards. I’m sure the 120 grain ttsx bullets will do fine.

Two bulls to my credit with the 120gr TTSX and 7-08. One at 80 yards and the other at about 125 yards. Both in very thick woods in Western Idaho, both essentially bang/flop with complete pass-through. One shot each. This was coming from the 20" barrel of a Browning BLR.

All good to go from my experience!

I load my lady’s tikka T3x in 7-08 with the 120 ttsx and they are fantastic. We limit her her shot to 300 and have never had an issue on big mulies and elk ever. If your rifle likes them and you keep the shot distance like you are saying above you will have zero issues.
