I don’t currently have my chronograph and am hoping someone has tested the 150gr precision hunter out of a Factory barreled Tikka T3x with 22” barrel. Anyone able to help?

Not a Tikka, but I get 2670 from a Rem model 7 with 20" barrel and 2754 from a Bergara Ridge with a 22" tube. Both have an ES around 35 fps. Accuracy is about 7/8-1" in both guns. Velocity measured on a Magnetospeed Sporter. Not bad factory ammo if you're shooting out to around 400.

It’s a start. That Ridge has the same twist rate and barrel length. Thank you!

You can back into it by shooting a 100 yard target then a 400-500 yard target.

You might be surprised...

For sure, I was more just curious if the posted velocity out of a 24” barrel was accurate for a 22” barrel as I’ve heard reports that the 7mm-08 reaches full speed in a 22”. Seems to not be the case, but I’m hoping to chrono it for myself soon.

Not sure why someone would suggest a 22" barrel would generate as much velocity as a 24" barrel in any caliber, but you can expect somewhere around 2750 in a Tikka tube with that ammo. I've loaded 7mm-08 ammo for my Tikka for years, and that's going to be pretty close for a 150 grain in that PH ammo. My favorite load for my Tikka was 162 ELD-X over 40 grains of IMR 8208 XBR for around 2675 fps. I have a 1/2 MOA target hanging in my garage that I shot off my pack at 400 yards at a range in Colorado 2 years ago.

Yeah, it seemed a little strange to me but figured I’d ask. That does sound like a great load. I have a couple boxes of 162 gr eldx that I was using for a 7RM but I’m thinking it will do well in the 7-08 at close to 2700 fps. Carries enough elk killing energy out to 500. (Assuming 1500ft/lbs)

But the 150gr looks like a nice factory load to get started on anyways! Thank you

At altitude (I usually hunt around 8500-10K feet) that 162 leaving the muzzle at 2670 will carry 1500 ft. lbs. out to 800 yards, which is about 2x as far as I'm willing to shoot anyway. ;)

22LR will shoot slower in a long barrel. Tikkas seem to be considered “slow” anyway, and posted speeds high.

150’s drop elk, expect 2700 from the tikka.

Color me unimpressed as a whole with eld-x, at least from 200’s, 145’s and 150’s. They kill, but so do vanilla interlock bullets. A max/ Eld-ms dump stuff like a lightning bolt hits them.

but in terms of 162’s dump those eld-x for eld-m’s and fill an ark. 162 eld-m hammer game. 162gr eld-x are longer and

That’s a beautiful B.C on those ELD-M bullets. I’ll check those out. Thank you!

If you reload, go with 180 ELM loaded long to the lands. New bolt stop and magnum Tikka mag. Amazing performance with little recoil.

I’m not sure if I’ve got a fast enough twist rate to stabilize the 180gr.

Should stabilize, but with the decrease in bc and loss of velocity you’ll be hard pressed to see the benefit

Exactly. Not like an 08 is going to have 162 haulin ass as it is.

As far as barrel length goes, funny how a 7/08 would be maxed at 22” but competitive 308 and 6br shooters run barrels 30+..

With the added case volume from loading long in a tikka, the muzzle velocity will push the 180 just as well as the 308 pushes a 178gr. You’ll just have far superior bc and sectional density. Only draw back is the COAL but in a tikka that doesn’t matter.

I think once i shoot the few boxes of Precision Hunter that I’ve got, I’ll try work up a load with the 162 ELD-M. Thanks for all the help!
