Action/Magazine Compatibility

Curious on what makes an action compatible with a magazine. I know that the box of a BDL type fits into the recess of the action, whereas a DBM just sits in close proximity to the action.
I’ve seen it mentioned that some actions need to be milled to accept a different type magazine, I.e. cut for Wyatt’s box mag, etc.
I understand that distance from the bolt to the cartridge is critical, what other factors are?

Specifically, I have a Kimber hunter that I’m making a custom stock for, and was looking into the possibility of using the 3 round MDT AICS mags, as they are light, cheap, and more universal. I would make my own simple latch system, but not sure about the top where the the bolt catches the round. I would imagine that CRF may make this even more complicated. The Kimber advanced tactical uses AICS magazines, but is the 8400 action vs. my 84m, not sure if there’s any difference in the action/mag interface.

Thanks for any help!
