Alternative food to mountain house/backpackers pantry type meals

My group makes all our own dehydrated meals. I can't compare to Mountain House as I have never had one, but our stuff usually turns out pretty good. Mix up some lean ground beef with bread crumbs, brown, and then dehydrate. Add to noodles with whatever kind of seasoning you prefer along with some dehydrated vegetables. One of our staples is mac and cheese with taco seasoning, dehydrated peppers, mushrooms, and ground beef. Super easy and doesn't taste too bad. As was mentioned before, chili and tomato sauce both dehydrate well.

I have some individual dehydrated items so I can make a rice mix dish or a potato mix dish. Make it at home, pack dry ingredients just add hot water.

I like the hashbrowns idea stated above too.
