I went out today hunting for some morels. It’s a bit early, but we’ve had a very mild winter and I’ve heard some other people finding them already. I hunted for about 3 hours and ended up with 33. None of them were giants, but like I said it’s still a bit early. Any of y’all hunt them? For anyone not familiar with these, you fry them up like chicken fried steak. 64838CE1-26A7-4732-8C76-0A018510E60F.jpeg8CDFD2C1-7058-43C9-B2F1-7915B2D293C2.jpeg757A07C5-1EF7-4F85-959D-FBC361A578E2.jpeg

Still early here also but I’m ready. My daughter (13) isn’t into hunting much but she loves looking for mushrooms... been mushroom hunting my whole life but now I look forward to the time together with her more than the shrooms.

Yep these warm temps are gonna start bringing them out soon. Nothing like a shed and mushroom hunting day to stretch the legs (y)

How long can you store them/how do you store them?
I dry them then put in Mason jar and in the oven at 200 to set the lids....I have some that are years old. I'll go hit a burn every couple years and get a hundred pounds or so.20160417_185253.jpg20160418_091713.jpg20160421_125405.jpg

Nice haul! Early season mushrooms are usually the best.

I'm more of a fall mushroom hunter. Chanterelles, lobsters, hedgehogs, cauliflowers and yellow foots are the ones I'm confident picking. I've heard there's some morel hunting on the west side of the cascades but I haven't looked too hard. Maybe something I should explore during this quarantine.

Very successful vegan hunter lol. Lots of times the deer or bear eat them!! Mostly high country, Sierra Nevadas. Chicken of the woods is crazy - taste and texture of lemon chicken. Ate some of that king porcini deep in the woods alone, grilled on an open fire with a willow skewer. Great great night. Saw the biggest buck ive ever seen on the hoof the next day.

We do have morels in western Washington, looks around the cotton wood type areas. Used to pick and sell mushrooms when I was in high school a hundred years ago. ( no, not those) Still grab a few of the yellow chanterelles once in awhile. About the only ones I find flavorful but one helping last a year or so. Dammed expensive, all of them if you buy them retail

Can you give some more info on what all you do with them? How do you cook yours? Do you mean you “can” them in the jars? Are they dry or is there a liquid in the jar with them? I don’t know much about them other than soaking them in salt water and frying them flour and grease. Most people I know pick them and cook them within a couple days or less. I know one guy tried to freeze some, but I don’t know how it worked out for him.
