At what point do you sell / throwout

How do you decide on how long you keep something that you do not use or minimally use before throwing it out or selling? Examples:
(1) I have a Stone Glacier hunting pack that I used once and have not used in 3-4 years. I hate to sell it because "I never know when" I will need or want to use it again...so I hang on to it.
(2) I have 2 Vexilar fish flashers...I keep a second (extra) incase some thing happens to one of them or if I take someone else that does not have one. I haven't used one of them in 2-3 years. I hate to sell one because I know what it would cost me to buy another one new.

I feel like after I just wrote this, I answered my own question on the 2 examples above...time to sell. Thanks for the therapy!

I'm lazy about getting rid of stuff. It's kind of a pain to ship sometimes so I sit on items. I have 3-4 scopes to get rid of. Brass. Sleeping bag. Packs. Stocks. Etc.

I don’t sell much anymore. It’s too expensive to ship. Tried the Facebook thing and what a joke that is.

Until I need room or money, I just let everything sit.

I usually sell my old stuff when I decide to upgrade, which is tough with packs. It’s nice to have them side by side. I like only having a pack, a bow or a rifle. Once I get something I like I usually stick with it and wouldn’t use the old stuff again anyhow.

I dont like to have things I dont use. I will get rid of it. One reason is the longer I hold it the more outdated it can get. Id rather sell it while it has value. I also would rather sell something to someone so it gets used than throw it out. I have sold things for the cost of shipping knowing it will get used and not go directly to the landfill. I dont like to waste things.

Old carpenters often gift tools or sell at a low price to the young guys as things are upgraded or replaced. I do the same with hunting/shooting gear. I’ll keep something long enough to find a new home for it. My junk can be the coolest thing ever for one of the kids in the family or within our social circle.

I’m also somewhat of the family rental shop and if someone needs to borrow something I’m the goto guy and an extra set of everything is kept for that. If they are ready to own their own it often gets given to them.

It’s amazing to me what people want for USED shit… Everyone thinks what they have is priceless. Most times (at least for me) you can go new for not much more in price. That’s why I have a brand new cargo trailer in my driveway as one example. I’m in the market for a 48” brush hog for my tractor. There’s a handful on FB marketplace that the guys are asking ridiculous prices. Case in point. There’s one for $1200. There’s a sale starting next week at the local farm store where I can get new for $1349. You do the math..

Recently cleaned out a storage unit. Found 4 packs I completely forgot I had. Shows how important they were. 2 Badlands and two generic brands when I was a broke college student. Kept the Badlands, tossed the others.

Oh...and a dozen arrows from a recurve I no longer have. lol

Items that are sentimental are hard for me to get rid of.

I get rid of stuff I don't use all the time. I can keep it and it provides zero value to me, or I can sell it and get 50-80% of the value back in my pocket. The money was lost when I bought it so I might as well recoup any value it can provide, assuming I won't ever use it.

I try to offload stuff I’m not using to folks who need it. If I sell it, it’s generally pretty low so I can get rid of it.

I'm the worst at getting rid of stuff, I have serious separation issues. My wife agrees. It can be hard to sell stuff too now. Most everything we get rid of goes in the trash or to Goodwill.

I went a little bit down the minimalism rabbit hole. Then we ended up selling everything and moving into a camper to travel. You find out real quick what you really need when you move into a camper.
It makes decisions a lot easier when you have less stuff to pick from.

20/20 rule, if your not sure on something and it's less than $20 and 20 minutes away let it go.
Pack up your stuff in a box and pull it out as you need. After a year or determined amount of time whatever is left goes..
If it's not expensive I goodwill it. shipping is always the pain of trying to sell stuff.

Once I no longer have space for it, I normally sell it. All my household items and outdoor gear gets scrubbed every 3-5 years when I have to move, that helps keep me honest with it. I hate moving things I don't have to.

I usually hold on to stuff just long enough for it to become obsolete due to newer model upgrades thus it becomes impossible to sell.

I generally keep two of most pieces of hunting gear that I've ever felt the need to go out and buy. It gives me redundancy for trips and an extra set to share if friends need something. I don't usually sell something just because I haven't used it for a few years. I'm still pretty capable and I have no idea what I might regret selling in the next season of life.

On the other hand, I don't have room to store lots of extra stuff. I try to own multi purpose gear, and I don't keep more than two of anything. When I decide to get rid of stuff it generally goes on eBay for 7-10 days with a starting bid of $0.99 plus shipping. The worldwide marketplace can decide what a used piece of gear is worth better than I can.
