Anybody backpack hunt the northeastern states? The expanses of land aren't what you get out west but there are some huge national forests that few people get deep into. I have 2 weeks off in October to chase colorado elk then 2 weeks of Pennsylvania rifle deer season. The first week I'm planning on hunting at home for big bucks and meat does. If I dont take a buck, the second week i plan on canoeing and backpack hunting around the Allegheny reservoir. Should be a lot of fun, will probably be pretty chilly at night but I'm already stoked.

I do a decent amount in PA, right around the area you’ll be in actually as well as in NY. It’s not like when I lived out west but it’s fun none the less.

How have you done in the past? I've heard deer number are coming back in northern pa.

It can be done but it’s a bit tough to find some place that allows you to both hunt and stay overnight. PA state game lands are an example. Great for hunting but no overnight stays. I have seen guys set camps on the edge of state land (on private property) and then hunt in and out of public. Have done something similar myself but at some point we are just camping out to camp out. More to get away from our wives than out of necessity. 😀

Bro, I’m from right on the edge of the Allegheny ..... I’m in Colorado right now and will be through 2nd Rifle as well as will be hitting the Allegheny doing Backcountry stuff at least the next 5 years maybe more..... are you from the area?

I backpack hunt the Allegheny National Forest as well as 2 other State Forests in PA. After the 1st mile marker I have the whole place to myself. It’s amazing all the further from the roads the stump sitters go.

Yup, I live near Brockway in Jefferson county so a little bit south of the Allegheny national forest. I'm super interested in doing some backpack hunt type stuff close to home. We should get together later this year.

I’ve done well, no booners but I’m not chasing monsters anyway. I hunt hard during the week when minimal folks are out. It’s ALMOST like I’m back out west lol

There is a lot of places to backpack hunt in vt, nh and me. Green mountains, white mountains, all the way to baxter. You can camp in all of it. Lots of game with terrain as rugged as I've seen out west. I'm one of the few who prefer it east. It's been years since I've seen another person in any hunting season unless I wanted to.

I've done a little in the past here in PA going to give it a more serious go this season with vacation time. The rules make it tough here in PA only being allowed to Camp on state forest or NF land. Has anyone camped on the AT and hunted off of it? I know there is no hunting on AT but can you use it to navigate through to SGLs?

All these places mentioned absolutely have that middle of nowhere feel people sleep on the northeast to include VA and WV and of course the smokies in Tennessee
