Barrel Length Recommendations - Youth Rifle

Hello all,

If this has been covered ad nauseam elsewhere then I apologize.

I’m looking for some barrel length recommendations as I’m about to have a Tikka T3x Lite Compact (6.5 Creedmoor) cut down/threaded for my daughter. She is fairly small and will only be using this for whitetails, mule deer and antelope. Although I may occasionally carry this as a lightweight backpack rifle for deer.

For what it’s worth, 6.5 Creedmoor was not my first caliber choice as I wanted 6.5 PRC but couldn’t find a factory model with a short enough LOP for her to handle. My budget is limited so doing a custom rifle or custom stock/chassis is not an option at this time.

My intention is to keep hunting shots inside of 400-500 yards with this rifle at all times, so please consider barrel length/muzzle velocity concerns with that in mind. The factory barrel is 20” and I’m torn between going 16.5” or 18” on the barrel. I will use an Area 419 - 2 port brake for her at the range then pull it off and run no brake or with a suppressor at times (re-zeroing/dope to account for shift) when hunting. Most likely factory loads for now, whichever it likes more but likely Barnes LR 127 grain or Hornady 143s.

Thank you,

Dan

I'm glad you posed this question. I am debating the exact same thing.

It's a pretty efficient cartridge. Almost all of the powder is burned in 18-20 inches. So while you might get a few additional fps per inch after that, but there won't be a big, scary fireball.

Do you all think I’ll regret going to 16.5”?

I run an 18” with suppressor for whitetail. I usually hunt with the 123sst and tape my turret for that load, unless I know I’m going to have a shot under 100yrd then I’ll use the 147eldm.

123sst @ 2750

143eldx @ 2550

147eldm @ 2530

Not al all, go 16” and load the 127s

Thank you for this. I like that too because it will be a slick little setup should I want to use it for high country deer

I'd leave it at 20"

The 143 eld-x are sloooow out of a short Tikka barrel. You can overcome that and be successful. However, the copper LRX need a little speed behind them, though.

I disagree with above b/c I've had an 18" T3x 6.5. A suppressor helps, but if you don't have it a short barrel is loud and has a big fire blast. Not for the faint of heart.

Thank you for this. So much to consider. Sigh.

I think they look goofy in the stock shorter than 18”. But if it’s a suppressor rig, 16” is perfect. Also look at 7-08. Great cartridge for a short barrel.

Thank you. I’m leaning to 18”. I did look at 7-08 but the recoil impulse seemed a bit higher, according to the charts on Chuck Hawks, etc.

My daughter is a small framed 14 yr old and shoots a Tikka compact 243 , I kept it 20” and had the barrel threaded 1/2x28 and run the area 419 two port. She is recoil sensitive and it seemed the tikka compact even in 243 recoiled a bit more maybe because its so lite. We have no issues with it and i keep her no more than 200yds. My 6.5cm tikka is 22” barrel and shoots 140’s at 2600fps

This might help make your decision easier. My 18.5" T3X 6.5 CM with the area 419 system and Omega gets the following at 1,184' elevation:

147 ELD-M: avg 2,445 fps

143 ELD-X: avg 2,382 fps

Using an impact speed of greater than or equal to 1,800 fps (for both bullets) as my limit, at 1,184' those bullets reliably upset out to 575 yards and 500 yards, respectively.

At 8,000 feet those ranges extend to 775 yards and 625 yards, respectively.
