My experience is buy something you can afford to lose, I've been down the rabbit hole of spending more and more on communications only to lose one or damage them etc. Ultimately I went back to big box stores GMRS radios, not the best but easy to buy, use and replace. You can get two plus a charger in a bubble pack for under $100 so everyone can carry an extra in case you lose or smash one and get a 45w mobile for the camp that will communicate with them at around $300.......plus I sleep easy knowing that I am only out under $50 when I lose one or it goes dead & just reach into my pack for the other.
