I’m looking to book a moose/mountain caribou combo hunt. I’ve talked to several outfitters, but am looking for recommendations or experiences (good or bad). It seems that the NWT hunts are running pricier than BC from what I’ve seen, but I wouldn’t rule either out. I’m willing to pay what it takes to have a top notch hunt/experience with a legit chance at taking both a nice moose and caribou. Below are some of the outfitters I’ve considered.
Terminus Mountain
Kawdy
Liard River
Ravens Throat
Arctic Red River
Mackenzie Mountain

While I was in Newfoundland moose hunting, another hunter was there for combo moose & caribou. He was wanting a B&C caribou with his bow. He got it..

The first three choices have the Canada moose, the others have the Alaska Yukon moose hence the price difference.

Yeah I guess my title was misleading. I meant more that I’m looking at hunting moose/mountain caribou in Canada, and not specifically that I’m looking to hunt Canadian moose vs Yukon moose. I realize that those first 3 are in NWT and would be Yukon. It seems that most, if not all, of the NWT outfits have a good reputation. It seems a little less so in the BC, so I’m trying to get a handle on some good outfits, or if I’m better off just sticking to the NWT.

Ravensthroat is where you want to be
I inquired with them. Bad part is they are booked through 2025, so 2026 would be the earliest. I was hoping to slide something in for 2024 or even 2023, the latter date probably being unlikely to find. Kawdy had a couple of 2023 dates.

I’d try Yukonstone outfitters, you might have a chance at next year seeing as they acquired another guiding area.

All three of the NWT outiftters listed are high quality outfits. No sure there are any NWT outfits that are not. I hunted with MMO and loved every second of it. Best adventure of my life. Honest in everything they did, said and committed to.

Out of the ones you listed, I would go with any of the bottom 3. Would also add Gana River Outfitters to the mix

Are you looking to do backpack or horseback?

Thanks for the input. Definitely have heard good things out Stan Stevens and his outfit.

I'll check into them as well. I'm not opposed to either horseback or backpack. Whichever is the most effective tool to have a fun (and hopefully successful) hunt!

If you do horseback, then that is what it is. You can hunt wherever the horses can get to.

If you do backpack, and you are older or prefer not to take on the physical task of helping the guide pack out your moose, then you may want to look for outfits with a helicopter.

I’m mid 30s and perfectly willing and capable of throwing a hind quarter on my back and covering country. But I’m not afraid to use horses (or a helicopter for that matter) if that’s the best available tool to have a shot at a big moose and/or mountain caribou.

With these outfits in the NWT you have just as good of a chance of killing a 60"+ moose and a 380+ caribou whether you do horseback or backpack. Hopefully this is helping you build your list of questions to ask outfitters to make sure you get the experience you are looking for, and so you know what to expect during your hunt.

I’m still waiting to hear back from a few outfits, but so far Kawdy is the only one I’ve talked to with room for 2023. Anyone have experience with them?

2nd MMO and Stan. He has a ton of game in his area.

One thing to remember is I’m betting a number of hunters who are signed up to go in the next few years are praying the government will lift the vaccination requirements. I’m thinking the government won’t do this and then suddenly the outfitters have a few spots open because of anti-vaxers so ask about that possibility when talking to them.

I'm headed up to hunt moose with Tahltan Outfitters in less than a month and will let you know how the trip goes. I know they do some horseback combo trips but we decided on a lake hunt for moose.
