What made these markings on this tree?

I found them all over colorado this year. All at head level. Weird. I've never seen it before.
 
Elk eating the bark is my understanding.
That's kind of what i was wondering. I live in MI and we have a ton of porcupines and black bear (black bear is what i originally thought when i seen it). Ive hunted grouse here at home in aspen thickets 100s of times and have never seen anything like it before.
 
I took pictures of the same thing, except varying heights. I had concluded it was from porcupine in the snow. Some areas they were 20' up. Looked like a prime location for snow to build up.
 
Elk will do that to Aspen bark. The width of teeth can usually tell you if it's one or the other, but I can't tell in your photo. Porcupines will definitely eat bark, but I normally see them in pine or spruce. They are hell on trees and will kill plenty of them.
