I found them all over colorado this year. All at head level. Weird. I've never seen it before.

That's kind of what i was wondering. I live in MI and we have a ton of porcupines and black bear (black bear is what i originally thought when i seen it). Ive hunted grouse here at home in aspen thickets 100s of times and have never seen anything like it before.

Google porcupine eating bark and got many pictures that look similar .
I never would of guessed.

I also agree it’s elk eating the bark, especially because it’s an aspen tree. If it was a pine or fir I would say porcupine. When the snow gets deep the elk will eat aspen bark

I took pictures of the same thing, except varying heights. I had concluded it was from porcupine in the snow. Some areas they were 20' up. Looked like a prime location for snow to build up.

Elk will do that to Aspen bark. The width of teeth can usually tell you if it's one or the other, but I can't tell in your photo. Porcupines will definitely eat bark, but I normally see them in pine or spruce. They are hell on trees and will kill plenty of them.
