Long time lurker, first time poster. Thanks for the info and guidance I've received from you all over the years.

I had the awesome opportunity to hunt with an outfitter in NE Utah with some of my work colleagues. It is a place I never imagined I would have the chance to hunt and it definitely didn't disappoint. I know it wasn't a DIY backcountry hunt but the knowledge and experience gained from my guide and the other hunters in camp was invaluable.

Buck was hunted all archery but never could get him pinned down, we spotted him from across a big drainage and made a 3 hour stalk and found him bedded about 20 yards over the ridge where we saw him crest from our glassing spot. We found a place I could get settled and we watched him chew cud for about 30 minutes through the scope from just over 400yds. He stood up to stretch and took a 143gr ELD-X to the heart.

I couldn't be more thankful for the lessons learned and the ability to take such a unique deer for my first Mule Deer on my first Western hunt experience.

Congrats to you - that is a heck of a 1st buck!! Really interesting rack, and like mentioned the bases on that guy are huge! Any idea if that was an older buck?? Thinking maybe it was with those bases?
They aged him around 6.5 or so based on jaw/teeth. Speaking to the biologist/ranch manager on the property and based on the fact that the buck had no dropped testicles its likely a testosterone issue. He had enough to get hard horned but there was still some velvet when I shot him so it was weeks later than the other deer. Likely he didn't shed each year so the bases grew wide and spiked. I believe the measurements were 10 plus inches on each.

You'll never regret mounting it. Love seeing the big IL whitetail that I have everyday. Especially now that I live in Arizona and large (corn/hay fed) whitetail just don't exist here.
