So a buddy was taken for a fake scope off of CL, I have been doing a little searching and thought I would share a few things I’ve found and prevent a few others from the same thing.

One thing to remember is that the person selling doesn’t always know it’s fake, so don’t immediately assume they are a crook, as they could have zero knowledge of the origins.

First, the zoom dial on real Leupolds always turn clockwise to increase magnification. Here is an example of a fake on eBay right now vs real.

On this fake, you turn counterclockwise to zoom as this one is turned all the way left and is max zoom. I haven’t seen another Leupold with an X after each increment either, but I’m not positive on that.

On this real Leupold the dial increases clockwise and has no 3x, 4x etc

On this fake one you can see the lettering on the gold ring is not straight or centered.

Here is an ad from a google search, obviously the fake model at $70 by the box, paperwork, cleaning rag, covers etc will all look real.

Another one i notice is the new leupolds have sharp angles around the adjustment knobs instead of rounded

Anyway, I hope this helps someone and remember the poor guy selling it probably has no idea he’s been taken. There’s a guy selling one as real on eBay and it’s up over $200 already. Remember also, PayPal goods and services or you are hosed if you take a gamble on a good deal.

I have yet to be begin to procrastinate.

Thanks for the insight. I’ve been looking at used scopes and was seeing odd things but figured who is going to fake this, so good to know they are out there.
