Memory foam and cold camping?

Ordered this roll up mattress for truck camping. Will likely be in the 20*s at night when camping. Has anyone had issues with memory foam being stiff in the cold?

I've used memory foam pillows and they were hard as a rock until my head warmed them up, but if the temps got low enough they never really softened. I'd have to think there'd be more heat from your body so should work better than the pillows.

I have the same one, have never had an issue with it, and I've used it in single digit temps.

However, that pad is quite large when rolled up. I have found that the Klymaloft air/foam hybrid pads are almost as comfortable. When I am limited for space in my pickup, I bring the Klymaloft instead.

Its going to feel like a rock at first but as it warms up you should be good. But I wouldn’t recommend any memory foam product for camping. The old egg crate mattress pads work well for me.

i find the memory foam comfortable in warm weather but cold as heck in cold weather----to the point i get severe leg cramps.

now i put a Therma rest on top for insulation from the memory foam.

In my experience it’s uncomfortable until it warms up and it absorbs moisture and gets pretty nasty over time. It’s also is typically heavy and cumbersome but your mileage may vary.

I have a memory foam mattress for truck camping that I bought in 2020. Used it multiple times in single digits. Always works great, no issues.

Some helpful specifics: Bought my mf mattress on Amazon for $90, looks the same as pic in the OP’s initial post. Very comfortable (impressive!) no noise, soft material/no slip, never hardens/no freeze. Came with a nylon case, no wear or weak spots, durable, smart construction. Highly recommend if you have the space for it!

I have a Milliard tri fold, think it is a combo of memory foam and regular, have used it down to zero, mostly in the back of my SUV but also in a Gazelle tent with a moving blanket under it.

Has been a game changer for sleep, nearly as comfortable as home!

Freezing makes sense considering a mf mattress is a giant sponge. Be intentional about keeping it dry.

Folks get suckered in by memory foam, unless you literally like that molded memory foam feeling get some quality regular foam. 3-4” medium foam or layer it with 1-2” of firm and 2” medium will confirm yet spring back when you move vs sinking into memory foam. Some like that memory foam feel but I think many don’t realize you can buy comfortable foam that isn’t memory foam.

I put mine on top of my blow up pad and it works excellent that way. You do run the risk of getting cold by going foam only.

It may be the chemical composition of the memory foam. It’s such a broad term it’s tough to compare


I’ll send you a tempurpedic pillow to try in the cold. It got so hard car camping in 40 degree weather it was unusable. The topper in our tent felt like you were laying directly on the ground. In low 30 degree weather weather. It eventually did warm and you sunk into a small body shaped hole but if you want to roll or move a bit you had to wait for the new area to thaw.
