I am realizing more and more that growing up in the 80s/90s using firearms and power tools without hearing protection has truly screwed my hearing. My kids and wife can often hear faint gobbles and bugles that I can't. I have a constant ringing in my ears.

At what point did you decide to get hearing aids/see an audiologist and was it worth it? What did you end up with?

I still just deal with it.

I think I probably had hearing issues when I was young, I can't really remember a time without the ringing honestly.

Now, I wear ear protection all the time, it comes with it's own problems tho. I use ear muffs, work tunes, etc. But in work I'm constantly around equipment. So I don't much see a way around it, and hate putting things in my ears.

Wife was asking when we do something about it, I shrugged, said what?

I think the muffs somehow cause hair growth, need to figure out a similar thing for the top of my head.

Honestly interested in the responses, probably should start doing something about it myself.

My tinnitus went away when I quit drinking Diet Coke .
I’ve tried many hearing aids with terrible results.
The background noise in restaurants was unbearable.

That's interesting. Something about the artificial sweetener I guess. I don't drink soft drinks though. Would have been something easy to try. lol.

I'm not looking for a tinnitus cure. That's not what was asked. Just general hearing advice and what people have done that they have been happy with at a middle age.

I just sucked it up. When the tinnitus started in earnest, I made a conscious effort not to let it bother me so it wouldn't drive me crazy. It is just there always like a little friend.

Hearing loss hasn't been too noticeable, especially compared to my loss of eyesight. :)

Sucking it up is what I have been doing but as my family hunts with me more and more I am realizing I am missing stuff in the woods. Ignoring that is foolish IMHO. Researching local hearing docs now...

I should say, sucked it up AND was much better with ear pro. I don't seem to have the hearing loss associated as you do.

I just deal with it but I am in my early 30s.

Duck blinds and small engines for me. I still am pretty bad at wearing ear protection.

Amplified muffs work well for me in the duck blind (Howard Leight), upland is hard for me to have good ear pro.

I have not noted as much of a hearing loss but a problem in separating multiple noises. I can do it but I find it irritating. Areas of massive background noise (bars, gatherings, etc) are a lot of work to sort things out and usually aren't worth it. I'd rather spend the day on an old dozer. I had a hearing aid a couple decades ago and found it made my ear sweat and really didn't help. When it died the second time in two months I just put it away and got on with my life.

I find I have trouble with some womens high pitched voices. They are not only difficult to understand but about as irritating as sand in your shorts. I'd rather just spend my time alone.

I need to start using ear protection hunting.

What do you guys do when you're still hunting? Hard to get ear plugs in when a buck jumps up.

A suppressor. Titanium. Short and light. I no longer shoot any rifle without one. Ever.

Need to figure something out for my turkey gun though. Can't fidget to put protection in but need to be able to hear. I tried the Axil plugs but they totally sucked.

Suppressors….

I just deal with mine, had it since my late 20s. Duck blinds, hunting, and comp shooting. Sometimes it bothers me but mostly can be ignored. I remember getting pretty down at one point realizing I wouldn’t hear true silence again until I was dead….
Like mentioned, tinnitus isn’t fixable. They have special hearing aids that emit a frequency that over time is supposed to kind of “cancel” out the ringing by tricking your brain?

Whenever I shoot now it’s louder for the next 2-3 days, even with double ear pro. Stay away from brakes and indoor ranges if you can. Loud noises in general seem to trigger it for me and make it louder so I carry ear plugs everywhere now and wear them often.

I got tinnitus about a month ago in my left ear. I was pretty upset about it as I know there is no fixing it. Constant ringing and an echo of everything I heard on my left side. Literally heard everything twice.

After about 3 weeks it completely went away. Not sure why but it's gone and I'm good now.
