Optimal Caliber/barrel length/twist for copper ammo for up to elk sized game.

After watching a friend lay the smack down on an elk with a 100gr TTSX out of his 25-06, and reading about copper bullets (TTSX, GMX, Etip, Trophy Copper, etc) terminal performance decline after 1800-2000 fps, Im wondering if anyone here has thought about what rifle caliber, barrel length and twist rate would provide an optimal system to shoot 100 to 140 grain copper bullets and maintain these speeds out to 600 yds or so for elk sized game?

6.5-300 wby is the first one that comes to mind if you have the need for speed

Copper bullets are generally longer for weight so more twist. however you also want to push them fast so go average, or light for caliber bullets. 600yds and less BC really doesn't matter too much, and velocity will offset that. For elk I would aim for heavier- 140 class bullet just because they are tough. I have had great luck with the 168 ttsx @3180fps from a 300 wsm, but that's heavier than you want.

I would go 140's (look at the 139 or 145 lrx, 143 Hammer Hunters, etc) out of a 7 mag (or 7 saum, or 7 wsm, or 280ai) with a 9 twist.

This...I'm partial to the 143 Hammers

That 25-06 with a 100 gr bullet will be going fast- up to 3300fps! If you are shooting mono copper I like to aim for at least 3000 fps MV to get it out to 600yds, though some designs will still expand at lower velocity (1800 fps- 1500 fps per marketing hype). What calibers do you already have?

My answer to that question a couple years ago was a 24” barrel with a 1:9 twist chambered in 280 Rem. It loves Barnes 145 gr. LRX’s at 3,013 FPS. I practice to 600 and it retains enough velocity there with a good margin of error to insure opening.

Your choice of 7mm cartridge, I'd prefer something with some oomph to stay above 1800fps longer
155 hammer

Currently shooting 300 win mag. The 150 grain TTSX are zipping (3260fps), but dont print the best groups (1.9) and have a relatively poor BC. (Applied Ballistics has this bullet at a .198 G7). Will look into 7mm and 270/280 offerings.

After using Hammer bullets in a number of guns and various weight classes for each caliber, I have settled on having as fast a twist as possible, driving as light a bullet as possible that has a BC that will keep the speed above 2000fps for my max hunting range. I also prefer to use a bigger caliber for each purpose as I find the lighter bullets, driven fast, have comparable recoil to smaller calibers driving heavy lead bullets, plus the bullets are going thru the animal, so there isn't the same benefit as using a bullet with a higher SD.

So after this season, Im considering a faster twist rate rifle in 270 or 7mm RM. It appears that browning is offering faster twist rates in both these calibers, the 270 in a browning xbolt tungsten which has a 1:8 twist rate, with intent to see how the TTSX 130gr shoot... or possibly the 7mm RM with a 1:9.5 twist rate and TTSX 140gr...Anyone try these combos or have thoughts there?

You dont need a 8 twist for a 130 ttsx.

I have a fieldcraft.270 1:10 with 129 LRX, extremely accurate and has become my elk rifle moving forward

I've used a 7stw and 140 tsx for antelope and elk for the last several years. Thinking of going to a 300 PRC remage barrel and doing everything myself.

You don’t need a faster twist to shoot 130gr. monos out of a 270. The standard 1:10 stabilizes them just fine.

My T3 7RM with the factory 9.5 shoots the 140 TTSX very well. But I would definitely get something tighter if I had the opportunity. The LRX line shows poor stability on the Berger calculator with the 9.5, as do many of the Hammer bullets, if considering any of those offerings.

So I looked at Barnes new LRX 270 bullet in 129gr...looks like elevations under 7000ft this bullet is only "marginally stable" with a 1:10 twist....do you have any thoughts or info about other monos which might be better suited for the 1:10?

Thats what I was hoping to move into as well...the berger stability calc suggested that below 7000 feet or so this bullet is only marginally stabilized out of the 1:10
