GUNNISON, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife has developed a draft management plan for the Central San Juan bighorn sheep herd and is seeking public comment on the proposal.

The purpose of the plan for this herd and the location area, referred to as RBS-22, is to assess the current and historical status of the population and determine future management objectives that will span up to a 10-year period. RBS-22 encompasses portions of Gunnison, Hinsdale, Mineral, Rio Grande and Saguache counties and includes bighorn sheep Game Management Unit’s S-22 San Luis Peak, S-36 Bellows Creek, S-52 Rock Creek, and S-53 Bristol Head.

This plan is a continuation of efforts to modernize and formalize bighorn sheep management throughout Colorado.

The management plan summarizes and discusses key management issues including: historic distribution, current status, population objectives, habitat, hunting, overlap with domestic sheep allotments and recreation. Draft management plans typically contain three management alternatives: keep the population stable at present size, decrease the population, or increase the population. During the last five years, some of the sub-herds in RBS-22 have declined slightly while others have remained stable or are increasing.

The purpose of this plan is to provide management guidance in RBS-22, and promote the long-term conservations of this sheep population. Brandon Diamond, terrestrial biologist for Colorado Parks and Wildlife in Gunnison, and Stephanie Steinhoff, terrestrial biologist in the San Luis Valley, are seeking comments from a wide range of people, including hunters, stockmen, outdoor recreation enthusiasts, land management agencies, non-governmental organizations and the general public.

The draft management plan is posted on the Parks and Wildlife website at: http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/BigGame/HerdManagementDAUPlans/Pages/HerdManagementDAUPlans.aspx. Interested parties are welcome to send written comments to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, attn: Brandon Diamond, at 300 West New York Ave. Gunnison, CO 81230 or CPW.

The on-line survey is also open to the public and can be found at: https://www.research.net/s/RBS22DAUplan. If you are unable to take the survey on-line and would like a hard copy, please call 970-641-7071, leave your name and address and a survey will be mailed to you. Deadline to complete the survey is Tuesday, July 9. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission will consider the plan for final adoption in November.
