Today is opening day of the California Turkey season.

Last night my dad put a couple toms to roost. We knew it was gonna be raining and make the hunt tough. We walked past the roost in the morning and set up about 150 yard down the canyon where we figured they would go. We never heard a gobble and got soaked to the bone. After 2 hours of sitting I had to get up and go for walk.

I ended up popping out of some brush and spooked a hen. I figured the Tom’s would be close so I let out a yelp and to Tom’s gobbled 25 yards from me in the brush. I could see it was 2 long beards and was caught in the open. They we coming towards me and when they went behind some thick brush I made a 180 degree turn and got to a knee. One came out at 10 yards and I let the ol 870 eat.

Ended up making the best of a rainy cold morning! IMG_7669.jpeg

Congratulations on the Easter bird, I scored on Easter last year but with the early arrival my 1st hunts are still a ways off!
