I shot my first bear yesterday in Pa. When I skinned it today, it had a large, stinking abscess or rotten area on the side of its jaw. Clear fluid all around the skull. No wounds that I could see. Never smelled it until I skinned it. The biologist at the check station didnt mention anything. Had it hanging head down. Is the meat safe to eat? Obviously with a bear it needs to be cooked properly. Just not sure I want to chance it.

Yes, the rest of the meat is perfectly safe to eat. Animals, just like people get infections due to various things. The affected area is not fit for consumption, but the remainder of the muscle tissue is good living tissue, and therefore just fine.
