............ i dont see any real value in knowing exactly where the spine is on the arrow if nock tuning will tell you what direction to go.

Bingo!
Most carbons are pretty good now-a-days...if you are getting more than one or two in a dozen that doesn't group...time to switch arrow companies.

So do you just nock tune a bare shaft along side of a fletched? Seems to make sense to me.
No you shoot a fletched and bare shaft at the same target. The bare shaft serves as your paper tear. Basically you have the opposite tear in the direction your bare shaft hits. So a bare shaft to the left of the fletched shaft would be a right tear. Then you would make the adjustments for a right tear and try again. The picture above is a perfect scenario of both bare and fletched flying together, same equivalent as a bullet hole.
