Spine question

I’m currently shooting Easton Asix 340s. 28” carbon to carbon with standard HIT inserts, 100 gr heads, and blazers.

My bow is a CT3 at 28” and 71lbs. I’m thinking of building some new arrows. The front runner right now is the Victory RIP TKO still 28” with either a 30 or 50 gr insert, 125 gr head and 4 fletch. Haven’t decided on feathers or vanes yet. Puts me about 450-470 gr total

Guy at my local shop tells me I’d still be fine with 340 (350s for the victory arrows), but most arrow charts show I’m on the cusp of needing a 300 spine arrow. I don’t have OT2 or archers advantage or else I wouldn’t be asking. What do you guys think 340 or 300?

Thanks for any advice.

300 all day long it’s not even a question, great arrows I have the rip tko 300 with 75 grain insert and 125 heads cut to 28 depending on vane configuration I’m 485-500

300 for sure. I rather be overspined than under if I had to choose, but think with that much weight up front 300 will be just right. If you go 30 grain insert and run 4 fletch with wraps and illuminated nock, then you could probably get away with 340

And just in case you weren't convinced, 300. Personally, I'd be using a .300 currently with your specs.

I'm following this because I shoot a similar setup. All of the arrow charts show me right on the edge of 350/340 to 300. When I bought my BE and went to 125 I was sure the pro shop would tell me to go with the 300 but instead he talked me out it.

Recently I just ordered some Day Six arrows. I asked about spine and wanted to lean towards the 300's but he suggested the 350's. I assume they know what they are talking about so I went with the 350's again.

I’m guessing that it doesn’t make a whole lot of difference if the your setup is on the edge and it’s tuned very well. The shop I go to often times doesn’t even have .300 spine arrows.

I do notice that my arrows do seem to have quite a bit of flex in them while flying, but I usually chalk that up to my bow not being tuned great because I’m inexperienced when it comes to tuning.

I hate to walk into a shop and tell a guy he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, but if I’m shooting a 75gr insert and 125 gr head and most arrow charts figure for a 100 gr head with a standard insert then I really don’t understand why they say to stick with a .340 or .350.

My own opinion and experience but, you can't really be "overspined"with a compound bow. Under for sure. With a traditional bow spine is far more important especially when shooting off the shelf. I would guess many shops lean the opposite in order to keep speeds up with a "lighter" arrow. What I hear from shops is the stiffer spine will be "too heavy," not the spine to stiff. As always, ymmv.

I don't understand why these shops push 340 and 350 spine arrows with newer faster bows. For a hunting setup most of the guys-in-the-know (Ulmer, Cooper, etc.) will advise to use an arrow on the stiff side. I tried to advise a friend last year that was shooting 340 Axis, 125 gr heads, at 70 lbs with a brand new Hoyt Redwx and 31" draw that he was under-spined and he got upset. Told me that the Hoyt shop rep said that he was 'fine'. He kills a bull every year so I didn't continue to argue although his kills are typically inside 35-40 yds. I think that a lot of folks just assume these pro shop guys know what they are doing, and I'm sure that some do, but then there are a lot of them that don't know. I have always found the archery software programs to be pretty darn accurate and well worth the $ with a new setup.
