I’ve killed a lot of deer. I’ve never had one shot at 50 yards that hangs around. Especially for two more shots.

Or gut shots. I see deer stop running pretty quickly when shot in the guts. They are still on their feet, but they are usually not running full-out.

Yeah, or that. They typically look pretty sickly though, no? I’ve only seen one or two hit in the tummy that I can recall, that didn’t fold up pretty much immediately.

Not saying it didn't happen, but it had zero to do with a 223 failing on what is implied to be a heart shot. Lots of possibilities, but that isn't one of them.

I never mentioned the deer’s reaction. Definitely had signs of good hits on the first and second shots (hind leg kicks and vertical jump as far as I remember). It’s possible I missed all 3 shots, I’d never deny that as I didn’t recover the deer but I’ve hunted for decades, compete in shooting sports, and have a range at my cabin I shoot at weekly. You don’t know me or know if I’m honest but I shoot thousands of rounds a year and am far above an average shot. I’ll admit though I still get buck fever sometimes and have missed deer before so it’s possible, just not likely with 3 shots at 50 yards.

I personally blame the round. I was confident in those shots, but that deer got away and the chances of missing 3 times in that situation are VERY low.

The chances of shooting 3 times on a moving target in under 5 seconds is actually low. Again: try the experiment and see how you do. Then add the buck fever you admit to having.

I make hits harder than this a couple times a month at shoots with a handgun, actually about a shot per second into a smaller zone than a deer's vitals. I had a 22.2 second average time for my last USPSA match (20-30 rounds per match 1 to 50 yard shots) including a mag change and had the highest A-zone hits of everyone at that match, I didn't win it but I was very happy with my hit percentage. I participate in 2-gun and 3-gun matches as well. I can run a standard 11-hole barricade with my AR (granted it's a 9mm so we can shoot steels) in on a 50% silhouette at 30 yards in under 20 seconds, I do this a couple times a month, But you're right. You know everything about a hunt that you weren't there for. You're a jerk, it's not my opinion, you proved it as a fact. I'm not the first person to loose a deer with a 5.56...

I also mentioned I shot a deer even closer and found the mushroomed bullet but no hair or blood anywhere after searching for hours. You going to say I missed that one too?

We only have what information you give us on the situation. It seems very unlikely that you shot a deer 3 times in the heart at 50 yards, it kept running/stopping, and then you didn't recover it.

I’m laughing about it too. Not too offended. Going to spend all next weekend looking for that 4-year (or so) old deer skeleton just to prove some guys on the Internet I’m right .

I feel embarrassed that I’m the first person on the Internet to have a shot a deer with a 5.56 and not recover it.
