By how much? Watch your own chest as you take the deepest breath you can, then breathe out as much as possible. It’s probably a 5% difference from fully inflated, more than normal breath, to as deflated as possible without actually dying. 10% max. A theoretical animal that actually has a four foot wide chest, is still going to be 3’7” to 3’9” when deflated.

The rib cage normally does expand and contract with breathing, but an animal laying on the ground won’t change the rib cage dimensions significantly more than being at a full expiration.

If you want a 130 grain bullet try to find some sierra tmk they are one of the premier 6.5 bullets

I can say that a 30 cal 178ELDM at 360 yards is quite effective on a pig… maybe too much on something you want to eat.

I shot a Nilgai in South Texas last week. Figured how tough can they be? They are tough as hell. I'm all about a 6mm but zero chance I'd try to bust one of those down unless I could tag it in the neck or ear. My 300 WM felt small once I saw the size of a 1300# bull. No doubt you make a perfect shot it will work but those damn things don't sit still so you shoot them moving. Giraffe I'd be all about a 338 Lapua. And I do like small calibers for almost all my hunting now. With good but marginal hits they jump in the bush so fast and the hole plugs up so you never find them. Nilgai will run 5 miles on one lung. Giraffes are similar but twice the size.

Are you aware that the giraffe with a 6mm deal happened and is available for viewing on youtube?

Nah. I don't "reach" for my Lapua until we hit T-Rex territory personally.

I feel the same way. Have a neck injury so avoid at all costs. Guide "required" a 300 as minimum. But after I saw the damn thing it kind of felt T-Rex like. My 300 with a 180 TTSX went the entire length of the animal front to back and lodged just at the ass. It still ran and I put a shot in the neck in the brush. Shot the rest of the ranch up with a 7 Saum and Berger bullets.

Are you saying that a mature bull nilgai weighs 1300 lbs?
I literally hunt them for a living and have for 25 seasons now. A big bull will field dress close to 500 lbs early in the season. This time of year, considerably less after running cows for a month or so.
Your post contains lots of misinformation but I will stop there.
And yes, we do shoot them standing still.

Quick google search claims the heaviest bull on record is around 680 lbs…
