Ones I've dealt with were likely dumped out, or prior generations were. They'll pack up like Yotes, but aren't scared of people, even if one or a few. More dangerous to man than yotes, imo.Really surprised by the number of accounts guys are sharing of coming across wild dogs in the woods. I have to worry more about feral horses than feral dogs. Can't recall ever coming across one in Nevada. Is this more common east of the Mississippi, or is it happening in places like Montana and Idaho too?
Also - are these straight up feral dogs, as in born feral, vs runaways, vs just got loose?
38 GRAIN HP’s. I fixed it.
Always one…………![]()
Ditch the 38 grain HPs and go with CCI Velocitor 40 grain hollow point, best 22lr out there. Aquila interceptor is another safe bet.Kinda looking for info on a woods defense situation against stray dogs with a 22LR shooting 38 grain HP’s.
Appreciate all the info so far.
If anyone has more info pertaining to the above, I’m still here. Thanks.![]()

I only have experience with the AE. It has been accurate and reliable for about 2k rounds through my pistol.
If you're comfortable with that round, use it, but I've always liked 22s and have taken a tremendous amount of game with them, big and small, the CCI Velocitor was always the best performer as well as the Aquila, and yes, they kill dogs with impunity. Is there a significant difference between the Velocitor 40 HP and the AE 38 HP?

In my 25 years in LE, and counting, I've killed well over a dozen out of control canines, pit bulls,Rottweilers,Dobermans etc , as well as a couple labs and two giant poodles, we got sued over the poodles, but the state revised code clearly stipulated we were right, and we won. All shootings ruled justifiable half videotaped , the others weren't as it was before we had the cameras. The poodles jumped a fence and wiped out a dozen week old lambs as well as a couple ewes before we arrived ,the Benelli worked perfectly with one shot DRT outcomes.Only bad encounters I’ve ever had with dogs was with packs of 3+. In that scenario I would not want a 22. I may even choose a sturdy hiking stick over a 22. Anecdotally, growing up we had a neighbor who would “rescue” problem pit bulls. Dogs that were too aggressive for the pound and would have been put down. Guy had an 8ft chain link fence but they would still occasionally climb out of it and terrorize the neighborhood (killed dogs being walked on leashes, tore into a neighbors screened in porch to kill a small dog, etc. Animal control was always there. 60 yr old neighbor wound up caving the skulls in of 3 of them one day when they attacked him on his daily walk. He was carrying his golfing wedge.
