I am probably going to go with the LT Wright Frontier Valley. It is relatively Inexpensive, good enough to use as an adult, and doesn’t have a ton of laser text on the blade. The only downside is thst it is not available in AEBL. So corrosion may be a problem.

Mora Basic in stainless, stainless because it's their first knife, you don't necessarily want to tack on carbon steel care to it all, nail down the basics in safe handling and use first, helle also makes knives specific for youngsters with rounded tips.

The Small Pouter is near same size, shape and is in AEB-L. It is ever so slightly larger.

Also, for a hunting knife, the small northern hunter model, also in AEB- L, is a great design and checks your boxes.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think for a youth's first knife you need to take in the "cool factor". They'll take care of something that looks cool and be proud to have it. Steel, grind, etc aren't going to mean as much to them IMO - those preferences come with experience.

The kid in me thinks the 2 Bucks that @rds1865 and the KOA Badger that @sndmn11 posted look cool.

I still remember looking at my grandpas 110 when I was a kid. He got me one of those keychain size swiss army knives as my first knife - which I still have. Once I got a little older he got me a 110, and when he passed my uncle gave me grandpas 110.

My top pick for a kids knife they can use for life would be the meadowlark from Siembida custom knives. Get it with griptech handle and it should be perfect. Out of all the knives I have my meadowlark is the first one i grab given the option. He does have a custom order lost or watch his Facebook for open sales knives he has most week.

Benchmade hidden canyon is pretty awesome. You can get it in s30v or s90v, their warranty is top notch and they have free lifetime sharpening.

If he is really interested in collecting pelts, like many kids are, a really useful knife is a smallish bladed caping knife. It can be used for anything if needed, but really shines for detailed skinning, whittling and small cutting tasks. It’s also a knife that adults would use as a second knife. This style is made by a lot of makers, often paired with a larger knife of similar shape.
