They do work. I use one with my zpacks bag turned quilt. It adds warmth and keeps bag clean. I actually bought a second and wrapped my thermarest neo air pad. Added some R factor to it also. Slept warm at 9500ft. first week of elk season this year.
my stix are buried in my pack till I need them to haul meat out. I don't need anything in my hand but my bow when crunch time comes. I only use them for pack ins and pack outs.
I use a scoop of dark chocolate whey protein or vanilla and add it to my camp coffee. A little xtra protein to add to the daily menu plus a squeeze out of a honey stinger gel packet.
