    Gila Bulls and Drought Report?

Thanks for the report! Kinda surprising about the water. Thought it was a drought year. I can't sit still so guessing that my hunt will be a normal run and gun. Especially since your water report. Thanks again

    crispi boot advice needed

I own Valdres and Summits. I think if you want a full grain leather boot, go with the valdrez. If your a synthetic guy summits. I like both of mine. No preference. Pretty much same boot. Summits seem a little warmer.

    Gila Bulls and Drought Report?

Hey all. Was lucky enough to draw a unit in the Gila for archery elk. Was wondering what the bulls are doing/looking like with a drought throughout the state. Any first hand knowledge great....horn growth, late rut, reduced rut behavior. Thanks in Advance

    Bugle Report

Completely agree. I don't remember an elk season that has seemed so early. They are flat out not vocalizing, just barely at night even. Which is crazy as usually I have no issues. Gonna be a late year I think.

Socks for New Mexico in Sept.

Darn tough medium hunter or hiker for sure. I've tried Kuiu, Smartwool, Cabelas, Lorpen, FirstLite, etc. Darn tough is far and away the best socks for my particular feet. I'll be wearing them for my NM hunt this year.

Stories of calling in your first elk success or not?

I had shot a few bulls with my rifle and I thought I would try archery tackle, as I shot millions of wt deer in the Midwest with my bow. So, labor day weekend, I walked back a mile or so an area where I knew held elk when weather was hot, it was about 345pm. I set out miss September in a wet...

    A typical day during September?

I hunt from an hour before dark til dark. I never stop. I locate elk in the dark, close the gap, follow, follow, til they bed. Then I obsess about the wind, call them in, and kill them. I've killed most elk between 10 am and 4 pm. Then I pack out in the dark. Then I get up early and do it...

    Elk Calling/Hunting Podcast!

Don't listen to it! Just get in there and challenge every bull;) All Elknuts podcasts are pure gold, in my humble opinion. This one is certainly no exception. I'll send you my successful elk pics this year, Paul. Got 2 tags in Montana, and 2 limited entry tags in New Mexico to fill....

    The right questions for biologists..

I have found most biologist to be a great reverse barometer. If I ask about a general area and they try to steer me elsewhere, I know I’m in a good spot. If they say it’s a good area, I look elsewhere. Most bios are hunters too. This holds true in most otc units in Montana. Limited entry I...

    Elk Tip #3

Hey Paul- I think this was the best advice I ever got from you. I would take it a step further and say I always watch how I'm bugling something, whether it be a setup, location, or advertising. I never want to say FU before I say hello. When I first started hunting I would try to challenge...

    Packing out the rack

skin head and remove the lower jaw. takes 10 min or so. I will have my pack loaded and just carry the rack this way. gets it really light, especially all those raggys I slaughter.

Trekking Poles....an overlooked piece of equipment

I cannot believe we would not do research on this company as a supporter of HUNTERS. Although I sure appreciate the excellent review, Black Diamond is run by a group that is decidedly ANTIHUNTING. Shame on us as hunters for not doing research!!! There are MANY companies that make trekking...

    Elk calling help

check out Steve Chappelle on YouTube. He's the guy who teaches you the basics along with rocky jacobsen. Both free. Elknut (elknut outdoors) RHR (roehuntingresources) and Corey Jacobsen (elk101) will teach you how to use the sounds to kill them.

    Montana 215

I live in Butte, pretty much butts right up next to 215. FYI 215 has shoulder and damage hunting going on starting in August, which means rifle shots into large herds of elk. Really puts a damper on the bugle. Most of the elk are on the southern part of 215, on private land. As you go north...

Archery Elk with Team of Three?

I have found 3 hunters to be ideal. 1 shooter 1 caller. The spare guy can either film the shooter, coach the shooter, or most commonly relay messages to the caller from the shooter as to what is going on. Another benefit is that 3 guys can pack out an elk all in 1 trip pretty easily, so long...

    Elk Slopes

I've had my best luck in big ol basins that drop off from a north face. you know the type big, broken timber, swamps. Then sage brush parks on the south facing slope.

    Bear situation around Philipsburg/Deer Lodge...

I wouldn't walk in everywhere in Montana in the dark. But the area your planning on hunting is pretty safe. That's how I always hunt. Get somewhere you can hear when it's dark and game on.
