I drew a rifle buck tag for mule deer this year. Time frame will be in November. Ive been to the unit I drew in the last two years helping others. A long with some scouting. I plan on putting out some trail cameras and glassing. Getting to know the country is top priority. Opening weekend I should have 3 and a half days of hunting. Second weekend I wont be able to go, daughters birthday, but can leave that Sunday for the entire last week of the season. Approximately 10 to 12 days of hunting. Last time I was out helping out for a buck tag, we had the most success being patient and finding the does. This is a rut hunt. What I am curious about is if anyone has had success finding bucks during the summer months and hunting those areas later in the year. I dont believe these bucks have any type of migration. They will bachelor up and seek seclusion after they shed velvet. Is it worth seeking out individual deer? How large of a range do you think they may have? My mule deer hunting has been limited. Most of the time I have went for whitetails and understand how small those older bucks will stick to home and what has worked for their lives. I just dont have a clue what the range would be for a mule deer buck in the badlands and breaks type country. If I find a decent buck, can I expect him to stick to that drainage throughout the rut or do they go completely rouge? Looking for some pointers on scouting. Heading out for the maiden voyage this weekend.
