Current Unit 8 Late Hunt

Hello, my husband is currently hunting unit 8 late season and he’s off the beaten path in sage brush and junipers, which is not what he’s used to. He’s in elk and passed on a small one, but jumped a big one that was bedded down because he couldn’t see it until he was on top of him. My question is… what’s the best way to hunt the thicker areas of unit 8?
