This is a pure hypothetical fun “king for a day” thread, not to be super serious. Just exploring how we wish the rules were different in certain places.

Sunday hunting laws is the obvious one, which is complete BS.

I’d love to see the first week or at least few days of western seasons be “stock, bike, and ATV free” Give the guy with a rifle and a backpack a fair chance first.

This one will never happen, and will probably get some people ready to get the pitchforks, but I’d love to limit nonresident license fees to 10x that off the resident cost. Not disagreeing residents should have a huge advantage over nonresident with both draw odds and cost, but there comes a time where things are just downright nuts when one person pays $20 for a tag and another pays ~$1000 just because they live across an imaginary line.

Similarly I’d like to see non residents get at least 10% of the tags given out by each state. Again I know this will legally will never happen, but this is pure fantasy thread and I like hunting and exploring different states, so I’d love to see at least some minimal guaranteed opportunity for non residents in each state. Still would give residents a huge advantage, but it would ensure others aren’t completely locked out. Again, flame suit on.

Legalize corner hopping. Duh.

Give tax incentives to landowners for public hunting and fishing access. This happens in certain states I believe but I wish it was more common place.

What else would you add to the list if you were king for a day?

As a CA hunter this would make me so happy.

I hunt CA because I live so close and like getting into the wilderness areas that are within and hour of my house. What’s crazy as a non-resident I can get 2 OTC deer tags every year in CA. I’m not even guarantied 1 deer tag in my own state, which I think does an awesome job of managing the deer.

I should not be able to get 1 deer tag a year in CA let alone 2.

Minimum big game hunting age to the successful completion of hunters safety like New Mexico.

I think which ever Dakota had this rule changed it, but you could hunt any land by foot traffic only that wasn’t posted as no hunting (or something to that effect). That would be nice, would save you a lot of hassle of tracking down landowners for permission who don’t care if you are hunting their land anyway.

I live in Kansas and we have what’s called the Fair Chase Law. Long and short of it is that you do not need land owner permission to track and recover wounded or downed game. If the land owner “catches” you on his property and wants you to leave, you have to, BUT a game warden can come and speak with the landowner and escort you to the game if necessary. This year in Colorado I shot a bull that ran back on to private and died. Contacted a game warden seeking permission to cross the property boundary and retrieve it. He called the land owner and called me back. Land owner had said no. Warden made it seem like that was all he could do and was adamant to tell me not to retrieve it or charges would be pressed. Would be really nice if my $660 non resident elk tag and 250# of meat didn’t go to waste because I can’t cross a property boundary like I can in KS in that scenario, but I guess that’s also part of the risk you take hunting near private property.

X2 on the Wyoming wilderness rule, corner hopping, wild horse and burro, and grizz mentions above.

OP also hit the nail on the head with costs and tag allotment, even though they will never happen like he said! Still going to find ways to hunt regardless of the obstacles for non residents.

Find a way to limit road hunting. In CA, we have an obscene amount of people who drive around in their pickups dressed in full camo, yet never step foot outside of their vehicle until they see a deer, bear, etc.

If you are a healthy male/female, under the age of 55...no ATV or SxS for you on trails.

Use your damn legs.

Yes, I can afford them, I just would rather hike in and not blow out entire basins 5 minutes before shooting light by ripping up the trail in my gasser SxS.

Lost an opportunity on a great bear due to this
